The Shocker Multi-Eventers start off the indoor season today and tomorrow (Dec. 1st and 2nd) with what amounts to an intrasquad competition. Something to do if you have your afternoon's free.
At last year's MVC Indoor Championship's the Shocker men took 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th as the Shocks under Coach Rainbolt focus on developing depth in the multi-events to a much greater extent than most college teams do and certainly more than other Valley teams do which usually allows them to jump to a solid early lead in the Valley Championships.
As I said this is essentially an intrasquad competition with 7 of the 15 athletes current Shockers with 4 additional Shocker alums included All-American Austin Bahner. competing in the Men's Heptathlon. There are 2 athletes from Friends, 1 from Oklahoma Baptist and 1 unaffiliated to round out the field of 15.
Current Shockers competing include reigning Valley outdoor Decathon champ Sr Hunter Veith, Jr Ben Johnson, Sr John Nicholas, So Kaden Griffin, Fr. Lucas Shaffer (Conway Springs), Fr. Davis Bahner (Wichita Heights), Austin's little bro, and Edwin Sobalvarro. The last 3 are all participating as unattached which preserves their ability to redshirt.
Sobalvarro is listed as Unattached-Wichita State but he is not listed on the Shocker roster. From what I can find it looks like Sobalvarro competed for Friends last year. He is no longer listed on the Friends' rosters. It would appear he has walked on at Wichita State. Perhaps this is his trial to see if he can earn a roster spot.
The goShockers announcement refers to the 8-event Men's Heptathlon. It is, of course, 7 events. 4 on Thursday and 3 on Friday.
