2016-17 Shocker Men's Golf

Yesterday and today the Shocker men competed in the 12-team Bill Ross Intercollegiate hosted by UMKC at the Creekmoor Golf Club in Raymore on the south side of the KC area which was won by Grand Canyon at 4-over par. K-State was a close 2nd one shot back.

The Shocks finished tied for 5th with South Dakota at +13 for the tournament.

Missouri State finished in 8th place at +28. Missouri State's Adam Fisher did shoot a 5-under 211 to tie for 2nd in the individual standings.

Sr. Grant Bennett lead the Shocks at even par 216 (72-70-74), followed by Jr. Conract Walcher at 219 (73-71-75), So. Yannick Emmert out of Germany at 221 (76-76-70), Jr. Jacob Bishop at 224 (75-76-73) and Jr. Gage Ihrig at 225 (78-72-75).

So. Adrien Michellod competed as an individual and shot 237 (82-81-74) to finish well back in the pack.

A reasonably consistent and steady effort by the Shocks top 5 guys. Throw away rounds were 78, 76 and 75 so no real big blow ups there.

Grant's 3 rounds included 41 pars, an eagle, 5 birdies and 7 bogeys. His 70 in round 2 consisted of 16 pars and 2 birdies.
Conrad had a double bogey in Round 1 and Round 2 but still shot 73 and 71 in those rounds. Otherwise he offset 9 bogeys with 8 birdies and an eagle.
Yannick was a bit more erratic with 10 birdies and an eagle but also 12 bogeys and 2 double bogeys.
Jacob had 7 birdies but 13 bogeys and 1 double bogey.
Gage was perhaps the least consistent. He had 1 eagle, 9 birdies, 8 bogeys, 4 double bogeys and 1 quadruple bogey.

Yesterday and today the Shocks competed at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State at the Par 71, 7,242 yard University Golf Course.

Grand Canyon who also won the previous tournament the Shocks played in (see the previous post) kind of went crazy shooting a 15-under 837 to run away witht the team win. Grand Canyon #4 and #1 players took 1st and 3rd in the medalist race at 11-under and 6-under.

#49 Texas El-Paso was 2nd with a 1-under par 851. UTEP's #1 guy shot 10-under to finish 2nd individually.

The Shocks finished in 3rd place in the 13 team field at 4-over par. The Shocks were 2-under in Round 1 and 3-under in Round 3 but stumbled a bit in Round 2 at 9-over. The Shocks pulled to within 1 shot of UTEP late in Round 3. Yannick and Grant birdied their final holes of the round, but Jacob bogeyed his next to last hole and Conrad double-bogeyed his last hole. Pars by Jacob and Conrad on those holes would havel allowed the Shocks to tie UTEP.

The Shocks have 2 seniors on this year's roster. Grant Bennett who is one of the Shocks' top 2 players and Max Mason who is not among this year's top 5 on the team.

The Shocker men had a pretty decent showing at their 1st tournament of the Spring season as they finished 2nd with a team score of 861 finishing 9 shots behind UC Santa Barbara at the PRO Compression Invitational hosted by the University of San Diego. The Shocks trailed UCSB by 18 shots after the 1st two rounds and were able to cut that in half in Round 3 but were just too far behind to really have much of chance to catch them.

Shocker So. Yannik Emmert led the way with an excellent 13-under part effort, highlighted by a 9-under 63 in Round 1, that netted him medalist honors by 5 shots over the runnerup. Jr. Gage Ihig was a solid 3-under for the tournament and Sr. Grant Bennett finished at 4-over after recording a 7-over 79 in Round 1.

Unfortunately Jr. Jacob Bishop playing in the #3 slot and Jr. Conrad Walcher playing at #5 could not keep pace as they were 16-over and 11-over, respectively. Both are capable of shooting lower numbers than that.

Shockers competing in the 21 team Furman Invitational this weekend. Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Clemson are the only P5 conference schools in the tournament.

At the end of Round 1 the Shocks are tied for 5th at 3-under and are 3 shots behind leader Georgia Southern.

Yannick Emmert lead the Shocks with a solid 3-under par effort but what I like about the Shocks today is they put up 6 solid scores. In addition to Emmert's 69, Conrad Walcher shot a 71, Jacob Bishop shot a 72 and Gage Ihrig Shot a 73. Grant Bennett had the throw away score of 3-over 75. Max Mason, playing as an indiviual, shot an even par 72.

No other Valley teams are in this tournament. However, hopefully future conference mate Temple is dead last at 16-over after Round 1.

The Shocks fell a bit off the pace today and finished round 2 in a 4-way tied for 7th at the Furman Invitational at 2 under par 18 shots behind leader Clemson is was 12 under on the day and 20 under for 2 rounds. Chattanooga was 10 under on the day, South Carolina-Aiken was 8 under and Gardner-Webb was 7 under.

The Shocks lacked the solid consistency of Round 1 today. Grant Bennett shot 69, Yannick Emmert 71 and Gage Ihrig an even par 72. However, both Conrad Walcher and Jacob Bishop stumbled a bit with scores of 77 and 78. Not horrible numbers but not good enough when a number of other teams are going low.

Max Mason shot a 1-under 71 to go with his even par 72 from Round 1 but he is playing as an individual and his scores can't be used in the team scoring.

Temple solidified its hold on dead least as the Owls are now 30-over par, 50 strokes off the pace set by Clemson.

Shocks shoot their poorest round of the Furman Intercollegiate and finish in 11th place at 4-over par.

Gage Ihrig was good today shooting a 69, but Yannick Emmert shot 74 as did Jacob Bishop, and Grant Bennett a 77. Conrad Walcher had throw away score of 78.

Max Mason, competing as an individual, shot a 76 to finish at 3-over for the tournament.

Emmert and Ihrig both finished the tournament at 2-under good for a 14th place tie on the individual leader board.

AAC member Temple had their best round by far, shooting even par today to finish in 19th place after occupying last place (21st) after both the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Was at Crestview Country Club last Friday and the WSU Men's golf team was getting ready to play a practice round. Mentioned to several that they might be playing in the AAC next year and I think it took some of them by surprise.

The Shocker men's golf team heads to Edmund, Oklahoma this Friday and Saturday in their final tournament before the Valley Championship in about 10 days.

Of interest will be how the Shocks fare relative to future conference mates East Carolina, Memphis and SMU who are also in this tournament.

Neither the Shocks nor their future conference mates are doing that well in Edmund. Perhpas a combination of a tough course and windy conditions.

After 10 rounds SMU is 10th out of 14 teams at 36 over par. The Shocks 11th at +37. East Carolina is 13th at +50 and Memphis 14th at +54.

After a 12 over effort in the 1st round the Shocks ballooned to 25 over in Round 2. Grant Bennett had a reasonable good round at 3-over par 73. We had 2 other guys at 7-over and 2 at 8 over.

In the 2nd round Conrad Walcher had a 10 on the par 4 13th hole, Gage Ihrig had a 9 on the par 5 4th hole and Yannick Emmert had a 7 on the par 4 1st hole. That largely accounted for most of the decline in scoring in Round 2.

Shocks need to try to get their minds right in the final round tomorrow if for no other reason than it will be their last competitive round before the Valley Championship.

Well the Shocks got what they needed today. A good solid team effort as they shot by far their best round of the tournament and improved by 19 shots as a team over their Round 2 performance.

The Shocks shot a 6-over 286 today to move up to 9th place in the 14 teams field. Future conference mates Memphis, SMU and East Carolina finished 12th, 13th and 14th respectively.

Gage Ihrig carded a 2-under 68, Grant Bennett and Yannick Emmert both posted 2-over 72 and Conrad Walcher had a 4-over 74. Jacob Bishop had a 6-over 76 as the throw away score. That you can live with.

The Shocks had a total of 4 double bogeys today but nothing worse. Nothing worse than a 6 today and not that many of those. This is they way the need to play in the Valley Tournament.

The Shocker men's golf team heads to the Windy City as the favorite to win the 2017 Missouri Valley Championship on Monday, April 24th and Tuesday, April, 25th.

The Shocker men received 7 1st place votes while Bradley and SIU receive 1 each. While the Shocks are a clear favorite Bradley, Illinois State and SIU are tightly bunched behind the Shocks and any of those 3 teams could sneak up on the Shokcks if the Shocks falter. SIU is the defending champion.

Illinois State is off to a sizzling start at the Valley Championship. The Redbirds are 7-under in the first 4 to 6 holes as 4 of their 5 golfers are under par at this point. However, Illinois State's 5th golfer is at 5 over so if any of the other 4 falter Illinois State will feel the full effect of that.

Wichita State, Bradley and Southern Illinois are all 1-over at this point.

Shocks have pulled to within 1 of the Redbirds with 3 to 6 holes remaining. Redbirds are at +2 and the Shockers are at +3 for Round 1 after trailing by 8 shots after the hot start by Illinois State.

Northern Iowa has moved into 3rd at +9 as Bradley is now +12 and SIU has fallen to +18.

The Shocks stumbled down the stretch in Round 1 and have fallen back to 8-over par while Illinois Sate held steady at 2-over and Northern Iowa passed the Shocks coming in at 7-over.

Need to maintian focus throughout if they are going to be successful.

Round 2 should be starting shortly with the final round played tomorrow.
