Like the women, the Shocks took 2nd to host Nebraska Saturday. Sure would like to get them down here to the Heskett Center for a meet.

Nebraska 195, Wichita State 123, Colorado State 96, Illinois State 95. Nebraska men are real strong this year. I thought Illinois State would be better than that but it's still early. They did pretty well on the track events.

--The men weight throwers dominated going 1-2-3. Weston Cottrell won this week with a season best 64-8. What a great group of throwers! Unfortunately the MVC is one of the best conferences for throws in the country and SIU will battle these three at the conference meet.
--The distance guys had a good meet. The milers ran 4:11, 4:12 and 4:14. Two of them are freshmen (Penrod, Law) and the other is a long distance runner (Brady Johnson). Looking sharp early for those guys!
--Freshman jumper Jared Belardo finally had an average meet. Still jumped 48-11 to take 2nd in the triple jump though. He is ranked in the top-20 nationally.
--Also noticing the pole vaulters having a good season. Two guys went over 16' and two more were just under. WSU has a great tradition in that event.

This week the multi's will head to UNI for a Heptathlon. The next meet of significance is in 2 weeks at Air Force.

The Shocks had limited competition this weekend but the highlight of the week was Skylar Arneson with a big Weight Throw of 67-2.75 over at Pitt State. Several multi's went to UNI for a Heptathlon. The best of the Shocks were Chris Peters and Ben Johnson who went 5182 and 5100 pts, respectively. Solid PR's for those guys and will put them in contention for good placings at the MVC meet in 4 weeks.

                Wow! That is great quality.

Question: Are there concessions available at the meet?

1972Shocker, don't know if you made it or not but yes there are always concessions at the track meets.

The Shocker men defeated their opponents at the Herm Wilson Invitational Friday and Saturday at home. WSU 191, North Texas 169, UT-Arlington 154, UMKC 110, Oral Roberts 95.

This was the last team scored meet before the MVC Indoor Championships. They will have a non-scored tune-up Friday at Kansas State.

I did make it and was there from around 2:00p to 7:30p on Saturday. They were just wrapping up the women's high jump and just starting the running events when I got there. Seemed like a very well run meet and there were some very good athletes and peformances.

Ugis Jocis' 3,000 meter run was outstanding. I was impressed with Freshman Zack Penrod. I was talking with his Mom who said his high school did not have a strong track program and that he was very happy with the quality of the WSU coaches and program. He had yet to run his 800m race but his mom said he was more worried about being the rabbit in the 3K. He finished a vey close 2nd in the 800 while recording a PR and I thought he did an excellent job of leading Ugis through the 1st mile of the 3K no doubt helping Ugis quite a bit in setting a meet and building record in the 3K.

Valley Indoor Championships are this weekend at the UNIdome in Cedar Falls. Both the Shocker men and the Shocker women have been installed as pre-meet favorites.

Wichita State is the pre-meet Valley favorite in both the men's and women's indoor track and field polls in a vote of the Valley head coaches.

                        Go Shocks!

The Shocks picked up 13 points in the men's weight throw with Skylar Arneson 2nd and Weston Cottrell 4th but I'm sure they are disappointed that Taylor Goldsmith was shut out of the scoring after he fouled on all 3 of his preliminary throws and did not make it to the finals.
