  • Shocker Men 2012-13 Indoor Track & Field

Sounds like the men put in some solid performances this past weekend at Iowa State and at Air Force:

AMES, Iowa- Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton shattered her own Missouri Valley Conference record in the indoor 5,000m run and posted the fifth fastest time in NCAA history at the Iowa State Classic.

On Friday, the Shockers men's distance medley team earned first place at the Iowa State Classic. The quartet of Jake Wike, Ryan Hocker, Kelvin Busienei, and Tomas Cotter bested their closest competition by nearly nine seconds to capture victory.

Wike returned on Saturday to claim second place in the men's mile. The senior ran a new personal record with a time of 4:08.45, less than half a second behind the winner.

Cotter (8:14.46) posted the new time to beat for the Valley in the 3,000m run this season. The reigning MVC indoor 3,000m champion also set a new personal best in the event, topping his previous mark by over ten seconds.

At Air Force Chris Dubree won the men's shot put with a 56-3 throw. Dubree ranks third in the MVC in this event.
In the men's high jump, freshmen Zach Budda, Garrett Lynch, and Kerry Graber set personal bests and claimed the top three spots on the MVC performance list. Budda placed third with a 6-10 ¼ jump. Graber and Lynch both cleared the bar at 6-9 to place sixth and seventh respectively at the Air Force Team Challenge. Shocks look like they are building some serious depth, and young depth at that, in the high jump.

Not sure if the men's team is a deep as the Shocker women. Hopefully, @goshox74 will stop by for a preview of the MVC Indoor Championships to be held Feb 23-24 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

Thanks for the update. Quickly, the men will be underdogs to #20 Indiana St for the MVC title but they should put up a good fight. In fact the WSU men are deeper than our women but don't have the big hitters like Tuliamuk, Friesen, Ledesma, Morerod. This is a balanced team in most all events which should give them a chance to knock off Indiana St. But the Sycamores have an incredible squad and could run away with it if they do well.

I continue to be impressed with the track and field and X-Country teams. I wish that they had a little bit better facility for their indoor stuff, but the Heskett is better than nothing.

For those of you who want to follow the track and field teams more closely, they film a weekly show on Wednesday nights live on Ustream. They also archive all the shows. It is about 30-40 minutes in length and has highlights as well as interviews with coaches and athletes. It's not as professional as Shocker Sports Report but I'm sure it's the only show of it's kind about track and field. Very entertaining!

Next week will be the MVC Indoor Championships preview show.

Here is the link to the track team's Ustream channel that has all the shows and archives of the home track meets: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wichita-state-track-field

It's hard watching the video with no commentary and little statistical info but anyway, Shocks finish 3-4 in the Mile. I know they would have like to have finished 2-3 or 2-4 but a Tree runner nipped our 3rd place guy, which I assume was Jake Wike.

A couple of freshmen score in the high jump. Zach Budda finishes 4th and Garret Lynch in a 3-way tie for 5th. Sr Brandon Childs adds a point with his 8th place finish.

Shocker seniors Jake Wike and Tomas Cotter finish 3-4 in the mile to pick up 11 points.

After 8 events scored the Shock are on top with 76 points followed by Indiana State at 62.5 points.

Shocks go 2-4 in the Men's 400, probably a slight disappointment.

Doc, I think the Shocks went 2 (D.J. Lindsay) and 8 (Mike Flores) in the 400. Mike was 1.26 seconds slower in the finals then he was in the prelims. His prelim time would have been good for 4th.

                    After 9 events: WSU 85 - INS 72.5

Shocks only score 1 in the men's 60 as Austin Bahner, the heptathlon champ finishes 8th and the Shocks fall out of the lead.

                      After 10 events: INS 87.5, WSU 86, UNI 78 and SIU 67

Shocker Sr Cory Beenken picks up 6th place votes in the 60 hurdles. Indiana State with a 1-2-5 finish is starting to pull away.

                      After 11 events: INS 109.5, WSU 89, UNI 86, SIU 72

Shocks come back in the 800M run with Jr Ryan Hocker (1st), Sr Jake Wike (2nd) and Jr Kevin Busienei (5th) gather a total of 22 event points.

                      After 12 events: INS 114.5, WSU 111, UNI 89

Sr Chris Dubree finishes 5th in the shot put and Jr D.J. Lindsay finishes 3rd in the 200M dash.

                      After 14 events: INS 138.5, WSU 121, UNI 108

Two Shocker freshmen with nice finishes in the triple jump. Shazz Michael Lindo in 2nd and Blake Glasgow-Willard in 4th. Shazz also makes the all-name team.

                      After 15 events: INS 147.5, WSU 134, UNI 112

Shocker men did not score in the 5K run.

                      After 16 events: INS 159.5, WSU 134, SIU 115, UNI 113

Final event coming up - the 4 x 400 relay. Shocks should pretty much have 2nd place in the meet secured.

We dropped the stick in the 4X400 and finished last, but we might have had an injury as well as I don't think we finished the race. As @1972Shocker: said though, it will not affect the placing. WSU finishes 2.

Final scores per the live results site:

                          1. INS 164.5
                          2. WSU 137
                          3. UNI 121
                          3. SIU 121
                          5. DU 70
                          6. ILS 43.5

Those finishes are right in line with pre-meet expectations except UNI moved up from an expected 4th place finish to tie SIU for 3rd.

Good showing for the Shocker men. That 2nd place finish will be very helpful in the race for the All Sports Trophy.

2nd place is a good thing. Does Indy St. have good track teams usually? I really don't follow it at all.
