  • Men's MVC Indoor Track & Field Championships - Feb 26-27

The Shocker men will be in for a battle as they try to defend last year's suprise indoor title. I will be at the meet so anyone who wants to give updates on here feel free!

After winning both indoor and outdoor MVC titles last year, the Shockers have returned with another strong team but, unlike the women, this meet with be a major battle with Indiana St, UNI, and SIU. On paper it looks like Indiana St and UNI are slight favorites over WSU and SIU (by maybe 20 pts). All year WSU has been battling bad luck with injuries but it looks like they should be a near full force this weekend at UNI.

Here's to hoping they pull off another championship like last year! Should be exciting!

'74, at full strength, in your opinion, does that do enough to vault them into a championship position?

Also, would you be able to give us a couple of events to look for to gauge how the team is doing, relative to a high placement?

For instance, something along the lines of "WSU needs at least 30 points from the heptathlon guys to keep pace"......or "If the Shocks could manage to get John Q Public into the 5th or better in the 800, that would be bonus points and take away big points SIU is counting on..."

I won't repeat it, but if you have the same information for the ladies.

Lastly, will there will good online coverage with video or other coverage?

    Thanks!

      WuDrWu,

If the WSU men can hit on all cylinders then, yes, they can compete for the title. I was forwarded the following scoring that is off the MVC lists: Indiana St 162, UNI 156, WSU 131, SIU 123, Illinois St 63, Drake 22.

30 points in a track meet of 17 events isn't very much but the Shockers don't have a lot of room for error. With 4 teams in contention for the title (Indiana St, UNI, SIU, and WSU) its hard to say which events could be turning points. But on the men's side here are some of WSU's biggest scoring events where they HAVE to get it done to have a chance.....

Heptathlon 25 pts, Long Jump 21 pts, 60 hurdles 20 pts, 200m 15 pts, Triple Jump and 4x4 10 pts. The LJ and TJ have conference leaders Simmons and Crawford injured but competing as far as I know so those are major question marks. I think we'll know by the end of Day 1 if the Shocks have a chance with the LJ finals and first day of the Hept. Of the 17 events the Shockers only get blanked in 3 (60m, 3000m, Weight throw) and they could score in all 3 possibly.

Anyways they gotta move up from these scoring places or get help from the other teams. I've heard Indiana St has some guy banged up too so UNI might be the favorite. SIU always seems to compete well at MVC's as well. Should be nip and tuck all the way! Exciting stuff!

Haven't seen anything about online coverage. I'll report on the ladies in that forum.

That is fantastic information...thanks so much!

I'll be paying attention this weekend, and as much as I can find updates from the host school, will update these threads as often as possible.

Josh Crawford suspended -- that can't help the men's team.

WICHITA, Kan. -- Senior triple jumper Josh Crawford has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, Steve Rainbolt, Director of Wichita State Track and Field, announced today.

Unfortunate for all involved. You almost never hear negative things coming from T&F (or any of the "minor sports").

That takes away a bunch of expected points.....in a race too close to call, that can't be a good sign for the team.

Yeah, that's a very unfortunate thing to happen with Josh Crawford - yet another obstacle this men's team has had to overcome with all the injuries. Seems like this team is snakebitten this year.

The Shockers were picked 2nd in the pre-meet coaches poll, I'm assuming most of the coaches were including Crawford in their thoughts before the poll was released. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the guys compete this weekend because it will be an uphill battle now. A 4th place finish isn't out of the question but hopefully they will pull together and move up!

                  Here's the poll --> http://www.mvc-sports.com/media/2010...ll_Release.pdf

Mike Zucconi is doing a live blog from the meet and already has updated it a couple times --> http://shockertrack.blogspot.com/

Only 24 hours til the meet starts, let's go Shockers!!!

The men got 4 into the 60 hurdles final. They could potentially pick up a couple of extra points here.

Freshman Austin Bahner from Wichita Heights is the MVC Champion in the long jump!

24'8.5" (7.53m) puts Austin in the top 50 this year in the country.

                        Well done young man!

Not getting Lawson Montgomery into the finals of the 200 will hurt the guys chances. Todd McKown is the top and expected qualifier.

Of the scored events so far:

                              Pole Vault - Prediction 1 Actual 1
                              Weight Throw - Prediction 0 Actual 0
                              Long Jump - Prediction 21 Actual 20
                              3k - Prediction 0 Actual 0
                              DMR - Prediction 5 Actual 3

Pretty close to what was expected, but not exactly what was needed to take the title.

Going to need strong finishes in the Heptathlon to get 31 points and the 200 to maybe get over 20.

However the biggest hurdle is overcoming the loss of Josh Crawford and his all but certain 10 points in the triple jump. It would take a huge effort to sneak out even 1 point from the other jumpers.

That's going to be real tough to make up.
