The thing is .. overall .. we didn't play that bad. Like Sub said about the SDSU loss -- isn't that we lost that caused the Shockernet meltdown, it was the way we lost. This was a completely different story.
Last night wasn't the same comedy of errors type loss that gives you that queezy feeling in your stomach.
No loss feels good, but at least we had two players that stepped up and hit very big shots at the end, and there wasn't the complete headcase breakdown.
We just got beat in a hard fought battle. It was a good game to watch, and UNI brought their A game. Dammit.
While I was watching this game, I kept thinking how in the world did Indiana State beat this team 70-45?
Maybe UNI had the team flu when they played the Sycamores.
On the other hand, maybe we'll find out Saturday. I hope not.
Thanks for your classy reply, sorry I was so grumpy.
I'm not talking about DK just last night, but his trend this year is disturbing to me. Don't you think 3's represent 70% of DK's shots hurting this team overall? As I said in my earlier reply 1.5 assists, 11 games with no FT's...he is no Reggie Chamberlain. He is big (for a guard), athletic, fast and explosive. All I am asking him to do is utilize those gifts for the benefit of this team.
I don't fault DK for being abused by #11. Nobody can guard that guy. Between he and James, our guards looked like zombies. I fault HCGM. Although James can shoot it from the perimeter, #11 is not as comfortable out there. How did this team not zone more last night? Let UNI prove they can hit shots from 22 feet vs. the layup drill. It was reasonably successful when Marshall used it in the small quantity he did.
I agree with you about the other no-shows. Don't have the time or energy right now to go into that. Thanks for the discussion.
If I was coach for a day: I would tell DK to shoot the threes when he thinks they are "good" shots. I want guys with his long range ability to be aggressive.
I would play DK more minutes as well. I think he needs to be pushed to average 14 points a game. I thought Marshall played the role of Kyles "cooler" during a long stretch of the second half, but it looked like we were going to expand the lead with him out so I can't really prove my point.
Change of topic (Ben Smith) - He scored ten points, but he also committed two turnovers when WSU had a lead. Those lost possessions were huge. I think he needs more playing time, but I can see why he hasn't become a starter yet.

Bingo... those were both huge 'forced' turnovers. To be fair, Hatch had a killer turnover during crunch time. I know it happens, but can't happen when you're trying to make a comeback.
I did get pissed at a couple of calls that are made by many at all levels but are simply wrong. I believe Rags got called once and I know Durley did. The offensive player gets close to the basket and the defenders jump STRAIGHT UP and the offensive player jumps into them creating all contact. UNI got the benefit of that call at least twice. I'll know more when I finally watch the DVR. That call makes me sick as an official. It's piss poor and is simply wrong.
Yep, a lot of bail outs given to UNI last night. Unbelievably frustrating. The players have to be thinking if I attempt to play straight-up sound defense, I'll get a foul called on me... or if I give them some breathing room to avoid a foul call, they'll just hit an easier shot. Effing catch-22.

x 2. I'm also with one of the posters that feels Marshall may be a little too loyal to Murry and Hatch, like they can't make mistakes.

If we lose Saturday I'll be taking an extended leave of absence from this board. Losing at home to UNI is unacceptable. Losing to the Trees even more so.
x 2. If this happens, then we officially have hit the tubes for this season. There is no way you can let a pretender like Indiana State beat you here. All they have done is won at home. It would be embarrassing if they gained their first ounce of respect by beating us on our home court. Our guys better be ready on Saturday and totally wipe out any hope of an upset from the onset. It would absolutely kill my birthday and send me into a Doc-like exile.

Also, when Durley backed down O'Rear with 3 or 4 bumps, O'Rear finally went down trying to draw the call, JT dropped the ball in and then - just for a split second - stood over O'Rear, staring at him. At the time I remember thinking that (1) it was close to a charge but they didn't call it, and (2) it was close to a T and they didn't call it, and that the sum of those two meant the refs might be watching JT a little closer from that point on. If memory serves, he got an immediate foul on the next defensive possession, and then his 4th a couple minutes after that on a questionable reach.
I'm sorry, but that was another patented NIU FLOP. I'm glad the officials didn't give in that time. Yeah, Durley should have watched it a bit with the staredown, but when he gets pissed, he plays pretty damn good ball. Sometimes I think this team needs to have a fire lit under them.

Simply put: They played the offensive game of their lives. Sure it didn't help that WSU was giving them a lot of open looks and their defense was shaky at times. But Northern Iowa is a team that has been averaging like 47 points on the road in Valley play. They shoot pretty bad normally around 42 or 43%. Their even more atrocious from 3-point range.
Chuck it up to one of those nights where they get every bounce and make every shot with their eyes closed doing circus tricks types of nights. They won't have one of those again this season.

DK is shooting a good percentage from 3 overall. Last time I checked, 3 points is more than 2 points.
And I think your whole one-dimensional analysis of Kyles has been completely flattened SHOX. You're all alone in this one.
I'm glad your math has clicked in...impressed.
There is nothing that has been flattened. Your world does not equal reality. And as far as DK's good overall 3 pt. shooting % is good. Do you think the last 8 games is a good sampling of statistical information? In that time DK is 30% from 3...that equates to SUBSTANDARD....1.5 assists...4 of those games without a FT...SUBSTANDARD for the gifts he brings to the table.
I think we all believe Colt Ryan is a notch below DK in many physical areas. Only 47% of his total FG attempts are 3's. One could argue he is a 3 pt. specialist, but he obviously is more creative to get his points than DK.
I just believe DK is capable of giving this team more than what he is right now. He is settling when he could be reaching for more.

FWIW, and in my opinion its worth a lot, Evansville runs a lot of screens, doubles and isolation plays for Colt Ryan. We do not do that very much, if at all for DK.
