Shocker Madness?

I'm admittedly a bit hard of hearing. My wife would insist it's more than a bit. I had not trouble hearing the sound Saturday. During the VB game and during SM.

For VB, I was in the front row. That was a mistake - I wanted to take some pictures, but all I could see was the cheerleaders! I had to settle for taking A LOT of pictures of the cheerleaders.

Fo SM I was in Section 120 about row 10. (That's half court on the east side for those unfamiliar with the arena).

It could be that different areas of CKA have different acoustics and the sound could be different in different areas.

I've always found the sound at games to be fine. This was the first year I've not noticed a problem at SN. Maybe I'm just used to the audio by now.

I suspect that call resides with Marshall. And considering the amount of practicing they'd done in the previous 24 hours, I would have probably done the same thing.


The thing to keep in mind is that the event is entirely a sunk cost. There is no direct revenue and I doubt there is any residual, with the possible exception of selling a few more season tickets. But those will likely get purchased (for more total $$$ I might add) as single-game tickets.

Assuming money is tight in the AD office due to the economy I don't blame them for cutting expenses on an event like that. We've also only heard about one hire to replace the two or three departures in the department. If manpower is also tight, there are more important things, I'm sure, than marketing a non-revenue event.

Then why have it at all? I mean, if it serves no purpose and makes no money...

Just take peoples' money for the games and tell them to pound sand on the rest.

I don't know if the coach participates in the plans for Madness or not, but, the athletic department needs to do a better job of it.

I would like to see more fans there but the 4,000 or so that usually show up get pretty loud if they are induced by the production to do so. I see no sense in whining about the attendance but the department should do a way better job of stressing the importance of the event.

The video board should be utilized, the lights should go down, the players should be introduced, there should be a 20 minute scrimmage, never a dunk contest, the cheerleaders should be revving up the crowd before and during the introductions, the band should ALL be in uniform, the AD should be on the court, and most of all the fans who are present should be standing and cheering the whole time except for the scrimmage.

The above is how the larger schools do it and we need to act our size-large!

I personally think Coach Marshall has probably said to the department, if you aren't going to do a better job of promoting the event then we are going to behave more like it is a practice so my players who I have recruited to this school don't think it is lame.

They have obviously decided that staging the event has some value, how much value, and what the budget can afford to get that value. Why should they spend thousands of dollars just to get another 1000 people in the seats? Those who want to see it will know about it, either through the Eagle, Wu's News, GoShockers.com or right here. And if Marshall (assuming it is a coaching staff decision) is just going to cut the scrimmage down to 12 minutes and cancel one of the highlight events (dunk contest, both understandable, IMO), putting valuable marketing dollars into it seems counter-productive.

They've done the marketing and production dance before for Shocker Madness and they maybe had 6000 there.

I think Missouri State may have decided that was the case (at least this year) as they dropped their fanfare event.

I think the MSU women's team may have scheduled a meet and greet function, but they dropped their "Shocker Madness" type event.

I discontnued going to the event in about 2002.

Most folks are there to see men's basketball, yet the activity is minimized.

When I quit attending, the running clock was 20 minutes. I have read that the running clock is now 12 minutes.

It seems to me that some re-thinking is required.

i sit at the top and the quality is pretty good. it may be the position of the speakers, idk.

i sit at the top and the quality is pretty good. it may be the position of the speakers, idk.

For the regular season I sit about 4 or 5 rows from the top in Section 120 -- still only make out about half of what is said.
