One thing I want to point out, is that coach has to balance offensive and defensive strength on both lines. You can't have all your go-getters and scorers on the first line, and end up having holes in the 2nd line.
It's not like anyone is a liability on defense. Maybe DK or the newcomers? Although they have shown flashes of ability.

I was somewhat disappointed with the festivities. Looked like someone put it together at the last moment.
I was also disappointed, compared to last year. Last year, they brought the players in by limo onto a red carpet with the house lights down. Nothing like that this year. Plus, the cancellation of the dunk contest.
I wojld be willing to bet that the cancellation of the dunk contest was part of Kyles ounishment. I'm sure he was excited to show off his skills. It is a good punishment because it punishes him and sets an example for the team. The team was probably disapointed in the cancellation of the dunk contest and that type of punishment can wake a kid like kyles up real fast.

That ebing said...I would love to have sen a dunk contest between Kyles, EO, and Blair! WOw there would have been some big dunks.

      • Not sure I understand Trip-G's reasoning for canceling the contest. Why not make DK watch all the other guys? Punishing the fans is a little like benching Perez.

Hope Dave gets it straightened out. I don't understand how they can get behind. Aren't they proctored pretty hard?

This is a good response from Kyles. I hope he does put forth the work required as he said he will. P'unk could learn some ettiquette from how to handle things on a social network from Kyles. Glad to have the kind of kids we have in our program!

Evidently you missed Ben Smith in the warmup dunk contest. Without a dunk contest, the players used the 5-minute warmup as a dunk contest of sorts.

I believe Smith could have hit his head on the rim with some of the moves he made. He had great body control and put the actual dunk on the opposite side of the basket from where you thought he was going to put it.

I believe Marshall has expressed his lack of love for dunk contests. As I recall, he mentioned the possibility of injury for something that really has no upside for the team.

Marshall isn't going to show the public an entire practice. I believe Shocker Madness counts against the practice time the NCAA allows. We're never going to get to see a real practice - and Marshall isn't about to give up a real practice to let the players play a "goof-off" type of game, so we're not likely to see much more than we saw last night.

Marshall likes to keep what he's doing under wraps.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

              Dear Mr. Kyles,

The apology was nice. But I am going to give you some unsolicited advice: Deep six the video. Take care of your school work, get back on the floor and produce. The only video footage of you I will be interested in watching will be culled from game highlights.

              Cordially,

                • Here is the write up on KU's Late Night at the Phog:

Page Not Found (404): It looks like you're lost... The page you are looking for no longer exists.

Their men did scrimmage for 20 minutes vs 12 minutes for the Shocker men. No dunk contest and no 3-point shooting contest.

KU's intro of their men's team was flashier.

The Shocks had the autograph session after the VB match and before the start of Shocker Madness.

Other than that the programs were pretty similar.

The biggest difference was there were 16,300 in attendance at KU. That's what generates the excitement IMHO.

                  • Compared to years past, this installment of Shocker Madness left a lot to be desired. If this is to be an annual event, I would expect the athletic department to improve over the previous year’s event and add something to make it better.

I'd like to see Shocker Madness focus more on the players, give the fans a little background on each one, and then do the introductions; that's what people come to see. The introductions of the players we saw Saturday were basically the same as a starting line-up intro at the games. Then a 12 minute scrimmage.

The team looked awesome and I enjoyed the scrimmage, but if the university wants more people to come to events such as this, they need to do a better job.

Why not utilize the video board more, show a highlight reel of last season, past shocker greats, or something. The video could end with the current team, showcasing the upcoming season to give the crowd something to get excited about.

I’m not a marketing expert, but isn't Shocker Madness supposed to be about getting fans excited about the season and to introduce the team? What I saw from the athletic department was “Shocker Sadness".

And to top it off, the season tickets were not ready for pick up either. So aside from seeing the team, IMO the night was pretty much a bust.

                    • I would love to ditch the three point contest and do a 20 minute scrimmage. Are you listening athletic department!?!?!?!

I suspect that call resides with Marshall. And considering the amount of practicing they'd done in the previous 24 hours, I would have probably done the same thing.

The thing to keep in mind is that the event is entirely a sunk cost. There is no direct revenue and I doubt there is any residual, with the possible exception of selling a few more season tickets. But those will likely get purchased (for more total $$$ I might add) as single-game tickets.

Assuming money is tight in the AD office due to the economy I don't blame them for cutting expenses on an event like that. We've also only heard about one hire to replace the two or three departures in the department. If manpower is also tight, there are more important things, I'm sure, than marketing a non-revenue event.

                        • The speaker system at HKA SUCKS BIGTIME. Sitting in the 13th row, I could understand only about one of five words.

The advance promotion of the event was horrible. There was no reference on goshockers.com until about three days before. Then is mentioned the cancer walk being $25 and that would get you into the VB game. There was no mention that wearing pink would result in a discount. No mentiopn of ticket prices. Times were 6:45 for the women or following the VB game.

                          The sound system SUCKS.

The evening began at 7, although the floor was ready before 6:35. Maybe the delay in the start to 7 was so the VB girls could join the BB players in the autograph line.

Something needs to be done with the speakers.

The video should be used during the intro of the players. Maaybe only 30-45 seconds each, with Don Hall giving information while the board shows highlights or at least several photos.

Do something to improve the sound.

It seems like we've gone from 20 minute running clock to 12 running clock. If they are going to shoot freethrows, then at least stop the clock for that. That used up at least two of our precious 12 minutes.

Personally, I'd like to see two 8-minute regular clock halves. If fatigue is a factor, alternate the women and them men's halves.

I love the three point shooting, even more than the dunk fiasco of past years. What they did in warmup is all I need.

Did I mention the audio SUCKS.

I travel two hours, so I liked the VB game preceding the basketball. Why not have $3 tickets to admit to both events? And promote it?

Give or raffle away three autographed balls, one each for the VB, WBB and MBB teams.

Just MHO, but don't try to "entertain" with non basketball stuff. I'd rather have the coaches explain a play or two, if they could get the sound system so that somebody could understand what is being said.

"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
