Or why David Kyles didn't play?

my bro-in-law texted me wanting to know who No. 1 was - he said he looked good. No. 1 would be Joe Ragland. Also said Stutz looked good.

Stutz looked stronger. His development reminded me of Miller between his sophmore and junior year. It looks like it has all clicked. Couldn't learn much from a twelve minute scrimmage but what I saw impressed. All the kids have beefed up. I can see what Coach is saying about all the hard work put in over the summer. Pretty excited and can't wiat for the season to start.

Doubtful many fans will refer to Garrett as Fi-Fi anymore.

Difficult to take too much away from these early season scrimages, especially considering both the men and women had already practiced pretty hard earlier in the day and walked a couple of miles at 3:30.

Garrett showed some good stuff as did Gabe. JT with a nice trey. I also thought Aaron looked pretty active. The guys have only practiced a couple of days. We've got the size, strength and athleticism to stay with anyone. Whether or not we will be successful in replacing Clevin's clutch perimerter shooting remains to be seen.

What I do think though is that scoring against the Shocks this year will be quite a challenge for most of our opponents.

Morgan Boyd of the Women's team won the 3-point shooting contest over Joe Ragland.

While the dunk contest was cancelled the guys put on a pretty good jammin' show in their warm-ups. I thought Gabe in particular looked inpressive and Joe will surprise you with his ups. The ability to dunk will not be an issue with this team.

I cannot remember a Shocker team ever, that every single player can dunk. I am sure this is not the first time, but I was impressed with our leaping ability.

12 minutes was just not enough time. The guys did look big. They also looked tired. I am sure they had a really long day with practice, lifting and a scrimage.

Joe will get some teasing for losing to a girl in the 3 pt contest. I thought he out played Demetric, but overall I was impressed with most of the players.

Nice to see EO make some moves, even more excited to see Demetric get up there and block his shot.

Joe Ragland definitely knows how to make a pass. This is going to sound silly, but they're almost too good. A few times the guy on the receiving end was so shocked to get the ball, they became indecisive about what to do with it.

Would have liked to see more from Ben Smith and Tyler Richardson. Not that they did anything wrong, it's just that they weren't that involved with Derrick Brown and Randall Vautravers also getting time at the 3.

I didn't see it, but I guess walk-on Trey Jones is hurt.

Trey stumbled or was tripped and took a pretty good tumble right at the buzzer ending the scrimmage although I did not notice anything injury wise at that point.

Just got back from CKA and I.....WAS.....IMPRESSED!

I'm expecting great things ths year, but the team looked better than I was expecting.

Play above the rim - Check. There's a lot of leaping ability on this team. Ben Smith can sky. D Will can play way above the rim. Everybody was showing off their ups in warm ups and it was pretty impressive.

Speed, speed, more speed, and quickness - Check. This is one of the fastest and quickest college teams I've seen. Look for a lot of hands on hips from opposing teams this year.

The front court players dominated the scrimmage - I'll get to them i a moment.

DWill didn't look like he's ready to give up a starting spot. Ragland won the 3-point shooting contest (for the mens' side - Morgan Boyd won the overall crown by hitting 30 of 55). It looks like there's going to be a battle for minutes there. It could even turn out to be that minutes might get based on situations.

Mr. Stutz is ready to play. He didn't look gangly awkward, or clumsy in any way. He appears to have grown into his body. If tonight was any in indication of how the season will go, he's the MVC POY and the athletic department will be fielding ticket requests from NBA scouts. He looked like the kind of 7' center you se on TV - not at CKA.

Gabe Blair - wants somebody's minutes. Gabe was doing everything and seemed to be everywhere. I was reminded of a 6'8" version of P.J. Couisnard.

Aaron Ellis - appeared more aggressive and assertive than I've seen him before. He had a monster block on a Murry drive and they both ended up on the floor. I thought it looked like he would be more of a factor down low than he has been , but he still doesn't look to be an 8 ppg type of player.

Durley - had a gppd scrimmage. It was about what I expected of him.

Orukpe - Seems to have progressed from what I saw of him in JuCo last year, but still has a ways to go. Marshall took a 5-minute look at Stutz and Orukpe playing together. The two of them still couldn't keep Blair off the boards.

I did notice all the players looking out for picks by both Orukpe and Stutz - and very carefully avoiding running into them.

Overall, I saw a lot of "in your face" and aggressive defense. This team isn't going to let anything go unchallenged. I suspect the Graham Hatch approach to the game has been adopted by more than a few players.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

If the entire team plays as hard every minute of every game as Graham Hatch does, we will be a top 10-15 type team. This anecdote makes me happier than any observations of individual improvement. Gracias!

In his comments HCGM seemed especially pleased with the work the guys put in the off-season in building and strengthening their bodies, and believe me that was pretty obvious to see. He was also complimentary of their work in the classroom.

Pure specualtion on my part but I'm wondering if the cancellation of the slam dunk contest and the fact that DK did not play might be related.

I'm glad it was posted who made the block on EO. That was a quick move & I couldn't tell who blocked it. I said after this event last year that Ellis would do something. He never really shot well last year, lokks like he has potential again. EO looks like a good passer.
                            + Blair
                            + for weight room.
                            Murry looked quicker.
A prolific male is no longer a stud he's a Stutz!
The girls look far superior to any team I've seen at Shocker Madness.
Usually this event has an offensive all star game feel. These guys got after it on defense.
Where was Kyles, I didn't notice him & was waiting on that freak show to develop.
                            + for team speed

I think that they are related. Total speculation, but DK might have been hurt practicing his dunk, and out of caution HCGM canceled the contest. Again, speculation.
