What you missed was a boatload of frustration. Count yourself lucky.
I'm seeing a lot of red today in the community... they don't seem too frustrated. Actually, most of them have a little 'pep' in their step.

Until Mangino's recent run to an Orange Bowl, the attendance at KU FB games depended on how far the visiting schools fans had to traqvel. KU doesn't seem to have many grads who are adamant about FB. Compared to OU, UN, UT, or even OSU, KU has zero avid football alums.

Right now KU FB is being subsidized by the Texas schools and OU. Without that money KU's FB program is probably a negative cash flow 8 or 9 years out of 10.

KU's FB program is safe as long as UT wants to be the big fish in the small pond and keep KU around for company. KU's basketball revenue and reputation could probably get KU into another BCS conference if UT ever decided to cut them off.

KU's (and KSU's) athletic departments are pretty much propped up by the Texas schools and OU. Those schools rake in so much money they can afford to share some with their little buddies (whipping boys).
And keeping that football program alive has allowed KU to stay in a BCS conference. We all saw what happened last summer when the major movers, shakers, and doers were re-alligning conferences based on schools with football.
      Roy Williams was/is short-sighted.

I'm pretty sure what we saw last summer was KU and KSU in full panic mode because if Texas had pulled out of the Big XII it was looking pretty clear that they were in big, big trouble. It was just beginning to dawn on them that in the new era of mega-conferences it is not possessing football or basketball (even top twenty basketball) that gets you in. What gets you in is commanding a major media market.

Bingo! We have a winner. It is a very environmental thing. It's all about the Green. And that means large TV markets.

              You're right -- I didn't read it close enough.

Good point, and that major media market is not restricted to geographic boundaries (ie. the relative small media market of Nebraska), but rather country wide. And a successful football program can deliver that mass market.

Additionally, KU would have been dropped from the Big XII if they had not fielded a football team.

Doesn't the MVC Bracket Buster record prove that we are far and away the most dominant non-BCS conference?
