Good read, as was the Mid Major All-Conference article linked in the article.
I think this sums up why we have recruited well and won under MT and GM.
Very rarely do I think about "missed" recruits but I still wonder why MT didn't show more interest to Josh Young. IIRC, Josh had interest in WSU, but we had no interest in him."Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should accomplish with your ability."

I got bored half way thru, so I'm not entirely sure what he was getting at and I'm not sure it was worth the space. What I got thru was nothing remotely close to outside the box thinking or whatever he was shooting for. Maybe I had to read further...Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

I think it's an interesting read, but I have to take exception to one of his takes:
Originally posted by Drew Cannon. . . if I were coaching at a mid-major I'd try to put together a team like this (built entirely on known quantities who were available at that level recently): Young, Pat Calathes from St. Joe’s, Nate Funk from Creighton, Jeremy Crouch from Bradley, and Will Thomas from George Mason.
Blair, Gabe
Brown, Derek
Durley, J.T.
Ellis, Aaron
Felter (but I hardly knew her!), Mason
Hamilton, Jerome
Hatch, Graham
Kyles, David
Mayes, Bryce
Murry, Toure'
Richardson, Tyler
Stutz, Garrett
Williams, Demetric
Ragland, Joe
Smith, Ben
Orukpe, Ehimen
Bring it!!Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

I'm not sure what the author's point of the article was, but what I took from it is that schools like WSU can attract the kid that doesn't fit the mold of the typical 1-2-3-4-or 5. I've always thought there's so much more to a basketball player than trying to fit him into traditional positions.
My guess is that the author spent July at many of the same recruiting spots as D1 coaches, and noticed several athletes that aren't rated as high as others because they're not traditional, and therefore will have an excellent opportunity to plug in with a smaller school.

The premise is quite simple - There are overlooked and undervalued tweeners that are good ball players and available on the recruiting trail. X would be the perfect example. Seems very similar to the Money Ball philosophy. Even here at SN we're often times guilty of defining a player by position just because +/- 2 in. AE seems to be the present example.

I'm not sure exactly how this applies. A coach looks at his roster, who he has, who is coming in and who might be available. At some point it all becomes a game of numbers. And that is why we aren't getting paid the big buck to coach the Shockers.

This could cause some matchup problems, but a good coach has to be flexible in his thinking.
