They deserve the chance to go on national TV and throw what they've got at the big shots. For a lot of those teams it's not about getting that win, it's about getting that shot.
Even if they are below .500?

I have never been a big fan of the team that got hot for 3-4 days being called "conference champs"...they are the "conference tournament champs". The conference champs proved it over the entire conference season not one weekend in March.
Yes, even if they're below .500 because that's the system that's in use. We could do away with the tournaments and just give auto bids to the actual conference champs and I wouldn't complain. I agree that they're the ones that proved it. But that's not how they do it. The auto bids should not have to play another game in order to get into the tournament.

Before too long the Great West will start getting an automatic berth. The only way these teams will ever win a game in the postseason is the play-in game. The question of even if they should be D1 at all is more important than how they get put into the tournament. I do understand what you guys are saying though, so I guess it's just agree to disagree.
Go ahead and serve up more excuses for the BCSers. The auto bid should be well, automatic. Maybe the middies & cellar dwellers in the BCSers should shop elsewhere if they want guarantees. Never mind the system is highly corrupt and will only get worse; a new division is on the horizon and it's the elites (BCSers) followed by everyone else.

A 42 team D1 is not going to happen anytime soon, there was a very slight chance of moving in that direction this summer with the conference shift, but nothing came of it. I don't believe new divisions are going to be a concern in the near future. (20-30 years)

As for the auto bid, I've always been a fan of it, but something needs to be done either about auto bids, or about teams moving to D1. The way I see it, there are three options; give out more auto bids when a new conference pops up, less at-large bids; expand the tournament to 96 or 128 teams; actually have standards for being D1. I choose the third option, although it looks like the answer will be tournament expansion, my guess is we'll see 96 or 128 teams within 5-10 years.
