  • Pick Up Games - June 25, 2010

Deer Slayer and I watched the Shockers play today.

    1. Everyone was there except Gabe Blair.

    2. In the first 2-3 games, Demetric and Joe played together. They were fun to watch. Joe deferred to Demetric in play. Demetric took far more shots than Joe did. Later, they played on opposite teams.

Though I should not be, I am still amazed how fast Demetric can push the ball. I wonder what his 40 time is. Joe made some great NBA type passes. He made one skip pass to Demetric that was a big time wow.

Also, Joe has a very high dribble hesitation move, which is fun to watch. I don't think I have ever seen anything like it before.

    3. The guards are so athletic, it will be a strong point next season. They were playing race horse basketball today and it was fun to watch.

    4. During the first, say 5-6 games, most all of the outside shooters were shooting very well. I could not hardly belive my eyes. Tyler and David were scorching and Ben was not far behind.

In the last two games, the 3 ball shot percentage fell like a rock. I think the players were tired.

    5. With trepidation, I will mention E.O. While I was there, he played in 3-4 games. In the first 2-3 games, his play was much like my last fine report. I was so disappointed that I made a note to myself to not mention him in this fine report of today. I did not want to set off a controversy.

In his last game, EO suddenly came alive and I could hardly believe my eyes. He started rebounding and defending with much greater energy and intensity. He even made a 4' hook shot. He stole the ball and dribbled the length of the floor and jammed in down. I was stunned.

Please do not read too much into the preceding paragraph. I am just saying that his play late was much better than earlier. I am not saying he is an accomplished player because he is not.

My greatest irritant with E.O. is his attitude. He gets beat, he smiles. A rebound is snatched away from him, he smiles. He misses a 1' jump shot, he smiles. I realize it may be some kind of mechanism to cover for his play, but I don't like it. If he had a little Ryan Martin or Ramon Clemente attitude in him, I would be pleased.

    6. The way David plays in pick up games is so much more aggressive and effective than the way he plays in regulation games. He is something. He has the tools to be very special. I hope this is a break out year for him.

    7. J.T. continues his 3 ball fest. I wonder, if Coach Marshall has asked him to work on his 3 shot in the off season. Also, J.T. is driving the ball often. He is either shooting a 3 or driving and he isn't doing much passing.

    8. Graham, Toure, David and Jerome are on the Shocker All-Pec team.

    9. The Shockers 400 meter relay team is comprised of Jerome, Toure, David and Demetric. Demetric is the anchor. I might be amiss for leaving Joe off the team.

    10. I was really impressed with Tyler today. He shot very well and he drove well. As I said before, I think he will be a fine player for us.

Of course, I thought the white kid from Arkansas, who was here for one year, was going to be a fine player for us. I cannot remember his name. He was an all state player in Arkansas.

    11. Cold Blooded showed up. He told me to tell everyone hello.

Thanks for the report RDR. Sounds promising. I'm sure EO will develop a little 'tude with time.

I think Chris Brown was the name of the Gatorade Arkansas POY we recruited and had on the roster for one year.

Chris Brown looked very good in pickup games. Back problems ruined any chance he had of reaching his potential. Shame.

Everything I've heard about EO is that he's a very nice young man. He's probably not past the 'polite' stage in getting to know his team mates, but I'll bet once he settles in and has the coaching staff ripping him a new one for being too nice, he'll come around! He'll have to find a way to keep his amiable personality off the court while becoming a monster on the court, which I'm sure isn't easy to do.

Nice report RDR, thanks for sharing!

Earlier in their careers, both Stutz and Durley were "nice" in the paint and didn't want much contact.

They're both making progress in that area.

After Stutz got shoved around for a year and beat on, he certainly wasn't as "nice" last year as his Fr year. With another 15 or so pounds of muscle to back him up this year, I imagine he might have some attitude in the post.

Once EO realizes what players are going to do to him in D1 ball, he will probably figure out some things he needs to do with the muscle he's got. That probably won't happen this year. When it does happen, I imagine he will still be smiling.

Yes, you make good points. I remember distinctly, when Garrett first got into a nasty mood in a regulation game. It was a welcomed sight to see.

Did Stutz look good? I imagine he was not remarkable since you left him out of the report. Did he play against EO?

Garrett did not play too much. He seemed preoccupied.

I don't recall Garrett playing against EO. EO was either going up against Jerome or the big juco kid, who weighs about 230#. I am referring to the kid, who will walk on.

There is one matter, which I did notice about Garrett. Usually, when he receives the ball outside, he takes a moment to decide, whether to shoot or pass. Yesterday, he caught and shot right away. He might be working on catch and shoot.

                          19. This may be one of the best Shocker teams ever with respect to depth. There may be former teams with better results on the season, but not in the depth department.

The above statement by RDR is one that could be very true!!!!!!!

We will lead the Valley in 3 point attempts.

I predict the Shockers will be in the top 3 for drawing fouls.

On the other side of the pancake, as Coach Parcells likes to say, I hope the Shockers reduce their number of committed fouls. We fouled way too much last season.
