This has gotten to be an interesting thread. We have primarily proponents and supporters of the sales tax idea and we can't come up with anything to satisfy the various interests here and to the compromises needed for the proponents to unite.

The "why should athletes get special consideration" crowd would jump all over this. Put 20K butts in seats in Cessna at $40 a pop for a chess match and I'll gladly support scholarships for chess players.

The same people who would never support any type of tax for athletic programs are the ones who spend $140 for a pair of tennis shoes without realizing that $40 of that is going to some college athletic program to pay for scholarships there. Advertising is a really sneaky form of taxation.

Alex Rodriguez makes hundreds of millions of dollars because of his outstanding ability to hit a ball with a stick. That irritates Joe Citizen so much that he won't support college athletics in order to show his solidarity with those who say ARod makes too much money.

In fact, while watching the Yankees on his LG plasma TV, with a feed from his bundled communications provider, and wearing his Nike sneakers, and downing another Budweiser, which he just picked up in his new Toyota, which he insures with Geico because anyone who advertises that much certainly has the lowest rates, Joe Citizen would grab his iPhone and call his buddy using his AT&T wireless network to rally support for the "no tax money for WSU athletics" because it's just not right to keep feeding these athletes all that money, while his little Suzy can't afford to go to college.

I'm much too big a fan of irony.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Since it doesnt matter this is the basketball forum and all... Or like all the people out there that want to boycott BP even though they have an IRA or 401k that BP is contributing to and keeping them on their way to retirement. Funny how BP isnt to big to fail isn't it.

I keep coming back to the fact that had community in and around Wichita supported football in the first place there would still be football. What make any of you think it would be supported a second time around?

Football is a much bigger draw now. It's not even comparable to what it was before it was axed.

I think the area has changed in a lot of ways since 1986, most notably its size, first and foremost.

Again, you have people that hate the Valley and want to get out. And then you have these same groups of people that look down to football. It's not a two-way street. You can't hold both of these thoughts and not look like an idiot.

If you're a forward thinker with the "future" set on your mind, then most would realize how far we really could advance this university with football. I think the reward outweighs the risk. There is a whole generation of fans (me included) that has never experienced a WSU football game before and would probably like to see it.

Pretty good crowds for Oklahoma State, Tulsa and others as I recall (K-State?).
Pretty poor draw against SIUs and some other MoVal teams. The trick IMO, is to have a master plan that would replace Cessna stadium with a stadium similar to Akron with room for expansion (much more fan friendly and closer to the action without the high sides and track), and to get into a better conference.

                  Yep.

I know it's difficult to dissect the budget lines available online, but I have a hard time believing the amount of money going to athletics from WSU is that high. "Direct institutional support" is much lower than you state.

I also believe our conference brethren get a lot more athletic money from their students and the school than WSU does. There is room, if the students want it.

The city has changed since then, and the state has had a taste of D1 football success, whereas prior to 1987 KU and KSU were not much to be proud of football-wise. Now people know how much fun fielding a successful team can be. Of course it remains to be seen if the potential WSU football program would be successful.

Not wise to get rid of the track. We have an excellent track and field program, host the high school state meet, and encourage our citizens to exercise with the Shocker Fitness w/ Rainbolt program. Need the track for a number of reasons.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

How about a domed stadium for football.
When weather is poor, the baseball team can play there.

You did not imply this, but again, caution on the level of success one may be looking for, particularly the level of continued success. While KU and K St still have bumpy stretches, reality may be that it will take a better than average WSU team to beat, and maybe just compete, with a lower than average KU, K St, and the like. This is the way it will most likely always be. One should judge success in comparison to WSU's peers, both in size of institution, athletic budgets, and conferences. Anything else would be setting the program, and one's self, up for unfounded disappointment. If WSU was to exceed those realistic levels, the program could prosper very well and wouldn't that be a pleasant happening.

What is the Mill Levy rate at that WSU currently is recieving from the city? Wouldn't it be easier to have a vote to raise that levy percentage?
