It's all about FBS football, and FCS football.
If the MVC had FBS football, then we'd be in the conversation just like the MWC and CUSA is currently. Without FBS football members, I highly doubt one of our current members will suddenly take a step up to FBS, or conversely a BCS "leftover" falling off a cliff into FCS.
I'd be really surprised if this current mess has any effect whatsoever on the MVC. However, I hold out a (probably irrational) dream that the PAC10 shuffle ends up with an odd number of baseball-playing schools (remember, new PAC10 school CU has no baseball), and we could somehow work our way into the mix as a baseball-only member. The new PAC10 "west" could be the premier baseball "conference" in the country, and we'd be a reasonable geographic and legacy fit.

The MVC has been through many, many changes in its history and no doubt will have more in its future. However, those probably will have nothing to do with the current football/TV/money driven grabs.
I like the 10-team home-and-home round robin setup for a basketball league like the MVC.
We've had more than a few discussions about possible additions to and deletions from the league that would improve the depth of the league.
Those changes will probably be more evoltionary than revolutionary.

It's crossroads time.
Do we (as a league) want to continue charting the future based on things like round-robin schedules, current rivalries, tradition and being nice to our lesser members? Or does the MVC wake up and realize that the status quo is a not-so-long term recipe for elimination?
We (WSU and the MVC) has missed the football window. WSU, MSU, SIU and Illinois St. needed to be in a position to commit to FBS football. So talk of MWC, C-USA or creation of a new conference isn't realistic at this point.
We need to strengthen the conference for basketball, and soon. Dump Drake and Evansville. They don't bring any revenue potential to the conference. Court a package of Butler, St. Louis, Dayton and Xavier. The MVC needs to retake the A10 and become the best non-BCS basketball league and hope its football profile improves. Perhaps someday it would make sense to add Memphis and Tulsa should they either decide to drop to FCS or enough MVC programs can jump to FBS (maybe 10 or so years down the road).

I don't really see the MVC ever being a viable FBS conference. I could see them being one of the better FCS conferences with the right commitment, although (as a conference) they are a long way from even that.
It will be very difficult to break into the super-conference club that is building on the horizon.
Whether WSU, the MVC and its ilk can survive and prosper in the coming environment remains to be seen.

I agree that building the mvc into a basketball power is the first priority for this conference. I have been against getting rid of the smaller budget schools but what is happening in the bcs conferences may be the blueprint we will neet to follow to be viable in the future. Adding some of the above mentioned teams in the place of the lower budget schools would strenthen the mvc initially but it will take a commitment to football to take it to the level of the mwc.

WSU needs to hire the Professor and McFly and bring football back 15 years ago.
If that falls thru then forget it, just enjoy the last few years WSU has left playing at the top level of college sports.
Some on here are just enjoying KU and KSU sweating it out. Well that will end soon enough. KU will land somewhere, probably somewhere pretty sweet. KSU in the MWC aint bad. The MWC is the best non BCS conf out there and a league I would LOVE to see WSU in. I'm not a fan of KSU or KU but I don't like any of this, I'm hoping the big 12-2 stays put as is becuase the potential 4 leagues of 16 will damn schools like WSU when it comes to D1 athletics.
Frankly the Missouri Valley Sucks big time. WSU and MSU need to get together and go beg conf USA to let them in. Maybe with the promise of putting football on the field in 5 years or maybe just as non football members. I don't care if the basketball is slightly worse, the baseball is much better and at least they play D1 football.
Plus when you look at the standings it just looks better to see UTEP, TULSA, MEMPHIS, HOUSTON, RICE, TULANE, etc than UNI, SIU, Evansville.
It's time to step up, if the valley isn't going to progress then WSU needs to do it themselves. Even if the Valley makes the addition of Dayton, Xavier, SLU, Butler (not saying its even a possibility) that would be 4 more private schools in the league. I don't think that where WSU needs to be. Granted conf USA has plenty of private schools but they are already playing D1 football.

Ta Town - I agree. I think WSU is going to need to commit to football (or get the right situation as non-football member) to get in with the right schools and conference.
My guess is, that after the Big East is the "pickee", they will become the "pickor" and take from the C-USA East and Atl-10 to fill its ranks. The remaining teams in those conferences, along with a couple others, will join together.
Getting in with the C-USA West, along with maybe LA Tech / N. Texas / Baylor / Missouri St, or in an expanded MWC is the best match for WSU. I don't like the idea of looking to the east to solve the problem.

When this is all done there are going to be 64 teams in the new power conferences. Whether WSU had a FCS football team wouldn't make a difference of where we'd fit in. Enjoy what we have and strive to make it better, but to think we're going to play on the same stage as the PAC-16/Big 16 schools is a pipe dream. That's like thinking the Royals can compete with the Yankees night in and night out. They can steal a series from time to time and that's about it. Enjoy it when it comes.Wichita State, home of the All-Americans.

I believe this is a defining moment, something that I didn't realize even a few days ago.
WSU and their leadership need to take advantage of the landscape today and do what's best in the best interest of WSU athletics, right now.
I freely admit its above my pay grade to say what that exactly is, but it would seem to me that they should demand the Valley improve the league (drop dead weight and add programs willing AND able to challenge and compete) or move on to a league that appreciates what we bring to the table.
We hang around with a worthless bunch of schools for the most part. With all that is happening, NOW is the time for change.

I actually agree with this. The MVC has let the Valley "rules" on RPI requirements slip (e.g. look at the Redbirds OOC schedule), for example. However, it is the university presidents who bear ultimate responsibility here; they vote or tell their ADs how to vote at MVC meetings. I'm not a big Doug E. fan but he only has power if the presidents give it to him. Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:

I read the following comment on ST and had to agree:
"t might also cause us to call for a coach's replacement, because Lowery does not own the mens basketball program, but he is a steward that has been given a trust to nurture and build it. It doesn't matter that he is an alumni or a former player, which he is and it doesn't matter that he contributed a great deal as a player if he is messing it up right now. That history makes us want him to succeed because he is one of us, but if he drives it down rather than building it up, he violates our trust in him.
WSU, MSU, ISU-red, ISU-blue, SIU & UNI are all public universities and their administrations (e.g. Presidents, Provosts, ADs) are stewards who may or may not deserve the trust placed in them. How active are the oversight boards who should monitor these university Presidents? (I think the general KU situation and the KSU football "contract extension" situation demonstrate the quality of work done by the Kansas Board of Regents.)Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
