  • Revenue v Expenses

Not sure where to post this, but since basketball is our main sport...

Interesting contrast between a few schools when one compares/contrasts revenue v expense as well as contributions and state/gov't contributions

    WSU: 22.8M revenue 18M expense 8M contributions 0 Gov't dollars
    KSU: 48.0M revenue 51M expense 12M contributions 1.9M Gov't
    KU: 69.0M revenue 67M expense 27M contributions 0 Gov't
    MSU: 13.8M revenue 13.8M exp 3.2M contributions 0 Gov't
    IlSU: 14.4M revenue 14.8M exp 1.4M contributions 0 Gov't
    UNI: 16.5M revenue 16.9M exp 2.6M contributions 0 Gov't

I didn't really get the chance to dive into what it all means as I'm at the airport between flights. However, almost the same gap in revenue between WSU v KSU and KSU v KU.
Not sure how KSU got 1.9M Gov't contributions. Maybe one of the emaws can comment.

Got to give Sexton kudos for increasing revenues over the years. I'm still not sure what the heck to think of the guy though (How about an indepth article Suellentrop). However, credit seems to be due...

I don't have time right now to dig into the numbers from USA Today, but UNI got $4.1 mil from the State of Iowa last year. Could the Gov't column be federal money?

And how does KSU get to feed at the public trough? Maybe that explains all the corruption that goes on at that athletic department.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

      Interesting.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but MSU, Ill St, and UNI all have football yet all run their athletic departments for a lot less.

Illinois St as an example has all the sports that WSU has plus football for men, swimming & diving, gymnastics, and soccer for women on 8.4 M less revenue, 4 M less expense, and with 7.4 less contributions. And they may beat us out this year for the All-Sports.

        Quote:
Just $194,000 of Perkins’ $4,485,274.66 income in 2009 came from “state funds,” paid by taxpayers.

The above quote is from a KC Star article about Lew Perkins 2009 compensation. The topic about this is in the off topic section, but the link is no longer connecting to the article.

The Equity in Athletics figures supplied by schools isn't reliable if that is where USA Today obtained their numbers. I wish the numbers were reliable. It allows the rich to spend more money in order to hoodwink the people reading them.

Here's one way MSU does it, by cutting back exp. in their teams transportation.

Good to see that they upgraded!
"If you're going to do it, you're going to do it right," athletic director Jim Schaus said. "If we're going to put 'Wichita State' across our chest, then every team is going to matter."

I am no accountant (Thank God) but I think the line item "Direct State or other Government Support" is just where KSU put their "Direct Institutional Support" payments. If you waste enough time you will see WSU spent $1,783,782, KU $1,832,970 and KSU $0 on "Direct Institional Support". Government is the largest source, by far, of institution funds.

Argh, I have to laugh when you call KSU out for "feeding at the public trough". WSU, KU and KSU are all public institutions and feed heavily at the "public trough". Personally I think this is a good public investment.

As for corruption, I think you are speaking of KU.

Well if ksu had 1.9 instead of only 1.8. I could see a conspiracy then.
1/16/2010 on the "Screw at the Q" HCGM... " Ive never seen a foul parade like that...If you would of let me know it was going to be a foul parade I would of brought a different team" .... "dont talk to me about fouls....Ive got to go back and look at some tape... I have some thoughts but I need to look at the tape and then I will have something very strong to say"

Hey, I can't pass up the opportunity to bad-mouth KSU when they're the only one of the big 3 in Kansas to report getting government money.

As for the corruption, maybe the government money is what they used for all the payoffs the employees of KSU's athletic department set up for each other.

At KU, they just have employees in the athletic department steal tickets and sell them, take tests for the football team, deliver "graduation gifts", well, that list is a little too long to complete in a single post. KSU's actions are much more in line with expenditures of government money. At KU they steal money the good old-fashioned way instead of relying on the government.

BTW, I'm just using the reported numbers to have some fun by bad-mouthing KSU.

That's about all there is to do on this board until Orukpe gets here probably some time next week. Then we can go back to the 130-page thread that never once over-hyped or exaggerated the effect of his arrival on campus.

By the way, Orukpe is one of the greatest basketball players of all time and don't you forget it.

You make it sound like Sexton has been here for years and years, when in fact, it was Schaus that increased revenue, Sexton has just maintained it.
