Discussion on SalukiTalk now centering around 5 departures.

There has been speculation for months over there.....It would seem fairly certain that at least some kids are gone.

However, if this current list is correct, they might not recover for a decade.

    Dillard, Booker, Teague, Crowder, Freeman.

Not just losing that much talent, but the void caused and the failure of the staff to keep the team together, at all, will cetainly leave scars for a long, long time.

Pretty safe to say the king is long dead in Carbondale.

Saw that, but isn't it a little ironic that Webber waits until the SIU program is in complete disarray before he scheduled a game with them? With the mass exodous out of Carbondale I don't think they have much of a shot at winning that game next year.

I'm not sure they have much of a shot at winning many games at all next year. They'll win as many games as Carmichael can get them the way it's looking.

              Carmichael? Agent Charles Carmichael?

Sub, I think you're confusing the Salukis and Redbirds a bit. ;)

EDIT: Seriously, what was going on since the study was
                          completed in March 2008
. It is now 24 months later. If the situation were so dire as to require desolving the department, why wait two years to make the recommendation?

I've already fired off an email to Dr. Beggs stating support for the physics program. I can't see how eliminating or even "reorganizing" it can be of any help to our stature as a university. Upon reading the article, it appears the new head of the department is doing a good job revitalizing the program.

This is crazy. It's probably time to go ahead and eliminate education altogether and just have an accounting and degree writing departments. Still charge the undergrads a full tuition but save them the time of waiting four years. The university would save a massive amount in educator salaries -- but who needs them anymore.

A university without a physics department is like a house without floors.

Unfortunately, there is a general trend in education to scale back or eliminate departments that are purely academic rather than specifically career oriented (see cuts to the humanities). Schools are under tighter budget pressures as levels of state funding have been decreasing for decades, making tuition a larger and larger part of higher education's funding. With tuition being the driver of funding, programs that do not bring in those student tuition dollars are much more at risk that when the funding model was based on supporting educational pursuits for society's good, regardless of the number of students.

I hate seeing stuff like this, but make no mistake, this is not just an issue for Wichita State. It is happening all over the country, and will continue to matter until we decide as a society that education is worth funding for reasons beyond individual students getting a degree that gets you a job.
