  • i don't mean to offend anyone, but WSU COULD have football as soon as people stepped up and did something about it.

It's a lot easier to sit around and complain about every one else who isn't doing something than to take the inititive and MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I just looked at a website and found that it would cost about 10 million a year to maintain a D-1 Football program. Your challenge, if you want Football is to get enough people to make a 5 year 10 million dollar commitiment to WSU Football.

If you had that and took it to Sexton, I bet he would be willing to bring back Football or tell you what else you needed to do.

For those of you that want Football that is YOUR CHALLENGE.

    What will you do???

      What a novel idea!

Let's get another thread started on that dead horse.

You need alot more money than that to meet title IX requirements or there will have to be some cuts in other male sports (baseball has been the choice for some).

Well you are assuming we would be out of compliance but I doubt it. With womens basketball, softball, and volleyball our ratio has to be good. If not, there are inexpensive ways to rectify that ratio without cutting any male sports.

          • You add 70 male scholarships and you will be quickly out of compliance.

WSU has more women on scholarship but not enough to add football without other additions or subtractions.

When Schaus looked at bringing football back the study said:

Shocker Football would return at the Division 1AA level. Programs competing in 1AA are allotted 63 scholarships. Under the gender equity legislation of Title IX Wichita State would be forced to also add three women's collegiate programs.
There will be nothing inexpensive about that.

Plus, I'm not sure WSU needs to add another sport that UNI can own us in.

I'd like to know what 3 sports he proposed, if any. You are assuming adding women's sports is expensive and I completely disagree. This is not a financial hurdle, mainly just a logistical one -- hiring more coaches/staff, etc.

Then just show the evidence that adding 3 women sports, with scholarships, coaching staffs and facilities would be inexpensive. I would love to see those numbers.

So there are two considerations in cost and you are drilling into only one of them, but the easiest to deal with: The operational costs of the additional sports would be easily covered by the profits from even a mildly successful football program.

The trickier part is the startup funding needed to get the programs under way: facilities, etc. Those costs, if the right sports are chosen cam be kept minimal.

Admit it you know that the massive profit from football will make anything possible.

I only have one question. Why does Wichita State need Shocker football? All the sports WSU have (that I can think of off the top of my head) are successful, and thats largely because of the fact that WSU doesn't have a football program sucking all the funds out of the school. The mens basketball program is back on track to national prominence, and games are almost always sold out now days. WSU student athletes have state of the art facilities to practice with, and amazing coaches (again, for all the sports I can think of off the top of my head). So again, why football?
Because football Saturdays are events that draw more attention. Football is the most popular sport in this country, and there's not even a close second. I personally see a correlation between football at WSU and the current problems. At one time, WSU was the second largest university in the state. After they axed football, enrollment started to go down. They were clearly able to maintain successful basketball along side football (whether successful or not) in the 1960s and 1980s.

As an out of town alumnus, I only make it back to about one basketball game a year, if any. I make a general university donation, rather than a sport specific. I would probably come back for four or five football games, and I would donate to that sport. There's just something special about football on campus in the fall.
The only problems basketball has had over the years was bad baskeball hires by Shocker athletic leadership (Cohen, Thompson, R. Smithson). I grew up attending Shockers football games with my father (may he RIP). I enjoyed it very much and wish that again. Unfortunately, it aint guna happen any time soon. At some point you have to trust the "powers that be," which aren't perfect, that they will bring football back at the appropriate time.

As many of the posters have said, football on Saturday afternoons draw great attention and energy in the community. A good sell to potential basketball recruits. If and when it comes back, a 1AA is the only direction to go. To think bigger is a foggy dream at best. The converse of that is without football, basketball reins king in Wichita. I am sure past and present basketball coaches have used that montra in many 18 year-old homes. Let's play the cards we're delt, recruit a quality PG, focus additional recruiting on replacing the front-line of Durley, Blair & Ellis for 2011-12 and kick arss in the MVC and start regularly reserving our name for the BIG DANCE!!!

After your personally-incited, month-long "Shocker Football" baiting thread last year, I'm going to guess most around here have no use for your space cadet comments. Your conduct on SN, VT, Eagle comments, et al., are an outright embarrassment to all Shocker fans in their right minds.

Why don't you just take your whiskey tango self on down the road, sweetie.
