CBS play-by-play Kevin Harlan guy just said this during the UNI/KU game: "Northern Iowa is trying to become the first MVC team to advance to the Sweet 16 since Larry Bird's Indiana State team did it in 1979".

We were. I think, the second time, he tried to make himself sound semi-correct by saying it was the first tournament champ to make the sweet 16 since ISU in 79. They had previously corrected the moronic statement by noting that others had made it. First tounament champ? How obscure a stat is that? Weak. Harlan was horrible the whole game. He never got Jay and Adam Koch straight...

Maybe he was referring to the tournament champions? Still, I don't think that's correct. He was trying to find any stat he could to try to disparage the league at the time. Apparently he didn't have one handy, so he had to make up one on the fly.
