I cannot fathom the situation in which the 7th place team from the Big East advances to play a conference champion like Siena or Utah State or Winthrop. Imagine the gnashing of teeth if the "BCS schools" were put in that position? Why that's unfair, isn't it?
Sorry to devert from Butler's great win, but how do you justify Vermont, East Tennessee St, Winthrop, UC Santa Barbie & Ken, Cornell, Robert Morris, etc...you get the picture, getting a bye????

I'd rather give teams who actually won their conferences a bye than teams who lose more games than they win in their conferences. I don't care how "tough" the conferences are. And the Big East proved how tough they were in this year's tourney, didn't they?

At least it would give the thing some balance. Any other way and it's gonna be a BCS Fest, literally.

I'm assuming "winning their conference" means regular season. You want byes going to the following conference champs with RPI in ()?

              Kent St. (46)
              Cornell (48)
              Sam Houston St. (71)
              Weber St. (85)
UC Santa Claus Barbie & Ken (96)
              Appalachian St. (101)
              Morgan St. (103)
              Robert Morris (127)
              Coastal Carolina (134)
              Stony Brook (142)
              Lehigh (152)
              Jackson St. (198)

Sorry...bad idea. You want to give byes to teams with RPI's equivalent to Indiana St. (88), Missouri St. (89), Bradley (105), Creighton (113), SIU (172). That would be laughable

It's either that, or give it to those low RPI teams who win their conference tourny. Frankly, there's no good way to do this without making mid-major fans/schools mad and/or letting in more BCS teams. Even if half of the teams were mid-major/small major schools someone would still say the MMs were getting the shaft due to 1) seeding, 2) who they had to play, 3) how far they had to travel. Plus, there'd be more complaining that more mid-major schools have to play in the 1st round while more BCS teams get a BYE..... basically nearly exactly like it is now. Going to 96 is quite possibly the dumbest idea in the history of NCAA athletics and not even the NCAA officials can deny that they're doing it for anything but money.

But, if they do this, they can't say the major reason they won't do a football playoff is due to "players missing class".

Go Butler. Just don't turn into a "Gonzaga" where I have to permanently take you off my "mid-major" list.

I personally think the expansion idea is laughable so why not? Yes, give those teams byes. Even it out. Right now, everybody from low-major to high-major starts on an even playing field in the first round (well, except the play-in winner). Giving byes to the Top 32 teams would essentially mean that about 95% of the teams with byes would be given to BCS schools. That is not an even playing field.

I personally think a Robert Morris with an RPI of 127 who dominated their conference and won actual games deserves a bye over a UCONN or Georgetown, with .500 conference records and are floating around with very mediocre records. Robert Morris should have beaten Nova. A bye for teams like these are totally plausible and deserved. They can't help that they're in crappy conferences. Play with what you're dealt.

Or maybe you'd just prefer a tournament full of BCS schools. You won't be well liked around here if so.

                    • Speaking of football, I find it interesting the NCAA is "improving" an already perfect basketball tournament (as perfect as it can be with the NCAA) to artificially give it more of a "competitive" look, but it is hell-bent and defiant about not trying to improve a system that would include a playoff in football. It is and always will be by the NCAA...all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!

                      • Every player for Duke has shot at least 50% from the field. They're at 52% for the game. I'm betting they can't do this again on Monday.

                        • wow talk about no respect, on my way home after the Puke game, Bill Walton was on the radio, just hammering on Butler, saying Duke will win easily, because talent wins games, and that in 36 hours duke will be holding up the trophy. Yea so what about Syracuse and K state.

Yep, he's right, didn't you see how Ali Farginamess out talented sherron collins and Shrek totally took it to Aldrich.

Butler doesn't have a prayer. Who in the hell do they think they are?

I dont think they can either but more importantly ..Butler was 15- 49 from the field and still won....They cant shoot like that on Monday but will need the same defensive effort and I think the first 10 minutes will be crucial..
