If Self leaves Kansas, why would Turgeon want to go back to a mid-major like Kansas? He would be taking a step backwards in his career.

Plus he's too smart to take a $1.5 million per year pay cut.
Not to mention that he's already won a conference championship and reached the Sweet 16 with a "mid-major". Been there, done that.

From phog.net:
beaker1310: Man I hope we get Butler....our SOS is in the tank and it's our only chance at this point.
sluttybabyjay: No chance......we had to give up home games the next 2 years just to get Creighton last year. I'm just hoping at this point it's an OVC team and not the Summit.....we've lost our last 3 against Summit teams.

Not obsessed at all. The problem is coming from the stench of the soiled undergarments of KU fans.
Those northeast winds blowing toward Wichita are brutal, especially when KU fans in Lawrence and the Kansas City area are having retention problems, upon learning that they are soon to be a (gulp)... mid-major.

Carry on.
Meanwhile our sister school to the northeast (that is about to receive the step child status they insisted had to bestowed on WSU) has a few things going on:
1) Millions of dollars worth of tickets disappear from the athletic department under two consecutive athletic directors and two consecutive directors of ticket operations. That's institutional control alright, but in the opposite way the NCAA likes to see it happen.
2) The AD violates an ethics clause in his contract with the state and when he's caught tries to claim he was only renting the illegal "gift", but no one will accept his rent check.
3) The B12 is about to dissolve and KU isn't invited to play with the big boys.
4) While the most critical league meetings in the history of the B12 are taking place, Lew Perkins isn't attending because he's a little tied up with the Federal Grand Jury investigating him and the KU athletic department.
5) The father of a student athlete (who took a year of walkon status to offset an NCAA sanction to lose a basketball scholarship) got $800K of laundered money out of the KU athletic department.
6) The KU fan base is collectively pissing down their leg. Except for the delusional ones who are convinced that any top-tier conference would love to give KU millions of dollars a year of subsidies to have KU bless them with their presence.
7) The KU Chancellor is so concerned that she's trying to get our state Senators to lean on somebody in Washington to get KU invited to the prom.
8) Bill Self is probably putting out job feelers just to keep his bases covered.
Any one of those at this time of the year would get some run on about any basketball board in the country. Put them all together and put them in WSU's back yard and it's not obsession. It's a train wreck and we're just waiting for the smoke to clear and see if the authorities send out ambulances or hearses. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

They are so desperate for a breath of life that I don't think knowing that the governor is a former Wichita State graduate would even bother them right now.
Validation is what they are now seeking and past achievements are nothing but a fleeting memory in the reorganization process. And, it is sucking the breath right out of them.
