  • Matt Braeuer

Matt is the most "cerebral" point guard I can remember ever having (only been watching since the mid-90's). He was obviously very well coached prior to high-school and did a great job for the Shox. Why is he not a full fledged assistant coach? He obviously has the game smarts and talent. Is it unusual for an assistant coach to be working on his masters while coaching or something? I'd like to see him building up his resume as a full assistant because that guy has the goods upstairs to be a head coach some day.

We are limited by rule (and to some extent by financial reasons) to the number of assistants we can have that can actually coach.

Who would you replace? Each of our assistants (and DOBO) have as much coaching experience as Matt has playing and coaching experience.

          Earl Grant: 10 yr.
          Marty Gross: 30 yr.
          Chris Jans: 18 yr.
          Dominic Okon: 12 yr.

Matt Braeuer: 4 yr. playing, 2 yr. GA. Someday, he'll be great.

I don't believe Matt even has his master's degree yet.

I don't know a single thing about any of them, and certainly am not qualified to propose to replace any of them (although that wouldn't stop a couple of our more [ahem] opinionated fellow posters).

It just occurred to me that many players out there graduate and become assistant coaches right off (and generally are not pursing graduate degrees). Since he is "doing the time" on the bench and at practices (again an assumption on my part), I'd just like to see him given the title so he is building up a resume early on. But WuDrWu said its some combination of rules/funding, so it is what it is.

Just thought I'd ask, I hate to see all that talent not get the full resume potential he could be getting, with the new dynasty being built and all.

Kung Wu Please give some names of coaches who in the past 10 years has gone from a Division I player straight into a Assistant Coaching position. I can't think of any.

I love Matty B and if one day he became HCMB I would be thrilled but after he gets his masters, he needs to get out and work with some other coaches. He needs to be exposed to different styles if he wants to grow as a coach.

Isn't the number of paid assistants set by N.C.A.A. rule? And I believe just about every D-1 basketball program has a Graduate Assistant position nowadays. That is if they can afford it.

Steve Wojo at Duke I believe went straight into coaching.

It may not happen in basketball at all. It was not unusual in the sport I played so I assumed the same for basketball? Perhaps not. I guess many of them go get semi-pro/pro experience before hitting the asst. coaching ranks? Now that I think about it, that was pretty common in my sport as well.

Well just for fun I went to the first team that came to mind after the Shox, to see what their assistant coaching staff looks like: Kansas.

They have an assistant (which I know nothing about) named Joe Dooley that graduated in 1988 and: "His first college coaching position was at South Carolina, where he coached three seasons (1988-89 through 1990-91)."

I know that's only a sample of one school, so I am gonna look around a little more and educate myself just out of curiosity.

I do believe it's far more common to be a GA for a few years. Prior to Braeuer we had Dana Ford who did the same thing and I believe now is an assistant at Tennessee State.

Matt will get a job as soon as he's done with his education.
