Matt is the most "cerebral" point guard I can remember ever having (only been watching since the mid-90's). He was obviously very well coached prior to high-school and did a great job for the Shox. Why is he not a full fledged assistant coach? He obviously has the game smarts and talent. Is it unusual for an assistant coach to be working on his masters while coaching or something? I'd like to see him building up his resume as a full assistant because that guy has the goods upstairs to be a head coach some day.

It just occurred to me that many players out there graduate and become assistant coaches right off (and generally are not pursing graduate degrees). Since he is "doing the time" on the bench and at practices (again an assumption on my part), I'd just like to see him given the title so he is building up a resume early on. But WuDrWu said its some combination of rules/funding, so it is what it is.
Just thought I'd ask, I hate to see all that talent not get the full resume potential he could be getting, with the new dynasty being built and all.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

Isn't the number of paid assistants set by N.C.A.A. rule? And I believe just about every D-1 basketball program has a Graduate Assistant position nowadays. That is if they can afford it."Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

Well just for fun I went to the first team that came to mind after the Shox, to see what their assistant coaching staff looks like: Kansas.
They have an assistant (which I know nothing about) named Joe Dooley that graduated in 1988 and: "His first college coaching position was at South Carolina, where he coached three seasons (1988-89 through 1990-91)."
I know that's only a sample of one school, so I am gonna look around a little more and educate myself just out of curiosity.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

I do believe it's far more common to be a GA for a few years. Prior to Braeuer we had Dana Ford who did the same thing and I believe now is an assistant at Tennessee State.
