May I ask when had it ever been appropriate to stand on the court, approach the ref and grab him by both shoulders to address a game situation?

It's on tape if nobody believes me? What do you think would happen if Marshall grabbed a ref on the sideline with both hands on his shoulders?
Altman grabbing a ref -- the ref has nothing to fear.
Nothing to fear? I'd be terrified that the squirrel on Altman's head would jump off and bite me in the neck.

I really don't care other than to be a stickler to the rules. If the coach isn't where the play is happening, whatever.

If a coach is abusing this privilege, he should get a fair warning. I remember seeing a coach getting T'd up for being out of the box with no warning fairly late into the 2nd half.

Bruce Pearl got one last year for leaving the coaching box. But when he looked down at his feet to see if he had actually crossed the line, he was standing directly on the line. I guess that energetic in-your-face coaches like him need to be even a little more careful than the whiny little sneaky ones.

Yes, but the energetic, in-your-face coaches are the ones that SOME opposing fanbases label "whiny, yelling, out-of-control, and an embarrassment to their team and school". I'd still much rather have that type than the sneaky ones.

How 'bout when we played at Vanderbilt in the NIT in 2005? The benches are on the baselines there, and I heard when the action was opposite their end Vandy coach Kevin Stallings would venture out darn near to the free-throw line to shout instructions.

              Aaahhhh....

This thread reminds me of the 82-83 season when Creighton came to town with Willis Reed and Benoit Benjamn.

All night long Willis was standing up giving the refs hell. All night long, the crowd cheered:

SIT DOWN WILLIS! SIT DOWN wILLIS!

Finally near the end of the game Willis finally sat down, and the crowd yelled:

STAND UP WILLIS!! STAND UP WILLIS!!

              8) 8)
Kansas is Flat. The Earth is Not!!

I'd like to see it. I'm pretty sure it would be followed very shortly by Marshall kneeing the ref square in the grapes.
                That can be very painful.
