Yea, because there really is no stigma about losing to a Division II team.

My point is that if they play everyone else and won't play WSU then it is something specific about WSU. That's my only point.

You can make up whatever you want about what those reasons are but KU plays about everyone small, large, good bad. Just not WSU.
In my opinion, the reason for this is because in the early 60s, KU was arguably the 3rd best team in the state and they knew it, and weren't about to have the rest of the world know it too.

KU was a fraud throughout much of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. If WSU and KU had played every years in those decades, it probably woudl have been very close to a .500 W/L record for both teams, with perhaps a slight advantage to KU. They can't bear the thought of even 1 or 2 losses every 10 years, let alone a loss every other yeer (Again, I am talking about the older fans).

Of course KU is far from being a fraud since Roy Williams, and especially so, with Self. They are legit, the real deal. But the trauma suffered by the KU fans from those decades is as deep seated as the hatred WSU fans from the same era have...

    • When a state legislator proposed the futile bill that in state D1 schools should play each other in basketball, arguments flew out of Lawrence that the government has no business getting involved in basketball scheduling. I would agree with that argument in principle, except they are not a private venture, THEY ARE A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY.

Nearly 3 billion tax dollars from the state coffers are funding higher education. Yet outside of their beloved Northeast Kansas fan base, KU has consistently thumbed it's nose toward the rest of it's home state. Remember those commercials on how KU "Serves Kansas?" That wasn't outreach, it was damage control.

An Owen, thanks for posting. I appreciate your insight and the way you maintain your poise under a hail of criticsm.
