Hopefully we won't have to deal with drunk CU fans wearing white robes in St. Louis for a while.

This is a prime example of what I meant by "showing your cards". You think you are "getting their goat" by referencing past negative actions by CU fans in an attempt to infer that this proves a rivalry exists.

By using the concept of a rivalry between the two schools as a point of mockery, you in effect are saying to them that we admit it is humiliating for you (Creighton) to think of yourselves as rivals with us, so we are going to use everything negative you say or do about us as further evidence that said rivalry exists.

Therefore, regardless of whether or not a rivalry is ever proven, we are willing to validate that: a) you are embarrassed to admit there could be one, and b) we are acceptive of the idea that Creighton's "stature" could allow them to be legitimately embarrassed of ANYTHING Wichita State in the first place.

Anybody remember the boy in class who always went after the girl that was way out of his league only to be shot down in front of everyone? Then instead of licking his wounds or refining his approach, he accepts that he has no chance and decides instead to irritate the girl by increasing his advances ten fold.

At this point his only goal becomes to validate his existence using the only weapon he thinks he has, her disdain for him. To him negative feedback is a more satisfying alternative to indifference. Perhaps the girl was just embarrassed at the onset. Regardless of the initial reality of the situation, the insecurities in the boy forced him to create a realty whereby his inferiority is now publicly assured.

Do I think this story illustrates the public perception of how the WSU fanbase relates to the CU fanbase? Absolutely not! Do I think that the whole "not a rivalry" schtick potentially places us as the boy in the story whenever it is used? Very probably.

I dont see how anyone cannot understand the "Not a Rivalry" shtick.

I think its a pretty fair assumption that this fanbase sees Creighton as a rivalry.

Many Creighton fans find themselves going out of their way to make a slam on Wichita not only WSU but the city and the people (regardless if they are valid or not) then sit around with their noses turned up and act like this isnt a rivalry.

So if this isnt a rivalry why go out of your way to make snide comments? Why would your basketball coach draw up a lob play in the final moments of a already decided game? Why else would your baseball coach say half the crap he says about our program?

Why am I explaining something so blatantly obvious?

Okay, MTXE, if that is in fact your real name, I have a question for your sharp, Psych 101-loaded mind: Why do you care?

Creighton's disdain of WSU isn't imagined, it's quite real. From well-referenced occurences of denying that we are "rivals" to referring to the Creighton@WSU game as "Your Super Bowl," the message is quite unambiguous.

And how does one "prove" a rivalry? I'd say opponents running each other down months before a game is played (and months after) is fairly strong, if circumstantial, evidence of a "rivalry." In fact, it may be the only available evidence ever. This isn't some contract that both parties have to sign up for. We don't like Creighton. If they don't return the antipathy, that's fine. Once we demolish them a few seasons in a row, that will change. Or maybe it won't. Maybe they really are good Catholic kids who wouldn't harm a fly. If so, good for them. Regardless, I'm perfectly happy with them not thinking twice about WSU, as long as we beat them every single time.

This isn't some sort of WSU inferiority complex manifesting itself, it's NORMAL FAN BEHAVIOR. It doesn't need to be analyzed or corrected in any way. We LIKE it this way. It's FUN. I LIKE chanting "Left, Right" when somebody fouls out not because I feel sorry for myself for some reason, but because it's FUN.

So, back to my question, why do you care about this '"not a rivalry' schtick"? Are you embarrassed by our actions? If so, I do believe that is your problem and not ours. Do you think this lowers the level of discourse on this board? Perhaps, but then again you should have seen the old ValleyTalk. This is Plato's living room in comparison. Do you think this is hindering the WSU men's basketball program in any way? How can building anticipation for a conference game be a bad thing?

Dude, do yourself a favor and YOU let it go.

The Judge says: Valid arguments on both sides.

MTXE, you make some good points (not the least of which is your pointing out the confusing usage of the term "rich" as a pejorative), but unlike your schoolboy example, we aren't actually trying to f*** Creighton when we say "F*** Creighton."

                    I hold that HockeyShock's post above hits a home-run.

I'm not sure who MTXE is. I've got a soft-spot for him, because unlike so many posters on here, it's evident he has a brain and knows, for the most part, how to use it.

But in sports fandom, armchair psychology plays a small non-speaking roll, rivalries aren't black-letter, shadenfreude makes days, and Creighton invariably blows goats. I have proof.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

There's a joke/stereotype about the followers of a certain major Christian "denomination" - closely associated with Creighton - that's begging to be rolled out here in direct context, but I'm not going to do it.

Suffice to say, you're only roughly the 3-billionth person to notice a commonality with this "denomination" and the Drink.

Real Christians (First Christian) do not consider Cathlics Christian, they are simply Cathlics.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to get my point across to you. I tried to make it exceedingly clear for all to understand. I must assume that many who commit this act of which I criticize, would be hard pressed to understand my complaint. However, I can assure you that many Creighton fans don't. Keep trying to "convince" them of a rivalry. They will continue to sit back and enjoy the compliment.

Personally I really loath SIU. Always have. Always will. Now there's a rivalry.

Jayball (alias MTXE), how are you?

                                1. I still want to kick CU's collective arses, and
                                2. I am firmly in the "it's a rivalry" camp, and
                                3. I am firmly in the "PAS is no better than Jamar Howard" camp

But hey.......hang in there, times will get better for CU. Until then, try being a little humble....maybe even somewhat self-deprecating. It will be a lot less painful for you.
