I wouldn't mind seeing either Stutts or Durley go against Dreiling.

the rest of the players you mentioned would probably be better than anyone on this team right now.

The future of KJ and DW could be interesting, They have talent IMO.

        even my boy Cam Ledford

I cannot believe that anyone brought up this name from the past.

        Please!!!!

Cameron Ledford could not carry the jock of Reggie Smithson.
come on. the kid didn't have most talent, but he worked hard and was a great example of work ethic and a solid late game sub. he was one of my favs. and as far as a role model, cam was ten times the man ANY shocker player has EVER been

shock, Cam is definately one of my favorite people associated with the program, and probably one of the most unheralded leaders of the Sweet 16 team, but to make the claim he is 10 times the role model of ANY shocker is pretty out there, unless you have known all of them personally.

Now, you could possibly make a claim that he's one of the smartest shockers ever, seeing as he's now in medical school and is beginning his clinicals soon. But EO may have something to say about that when he pursues engineering at WSU. And even in that case, an "ever in the history of Shocker basketball" is impossible to claim.

He's a great guy, and definately one of the best types of kids you can have, but I can think of plenty of great role models on this team and in teams past.

Let's keep the discussion in this thread to basketball related items.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

We may look back and say "Wow" but right now our bench has a lot of players that are new to DI (Williams, Manigault, Richardson, Hamilton), several that are still developing (Murry, Kyles, Stutz) and some that appear to be hitting their stride (Hannah, Durley, Ellis).

I hope by the end of the year we are talking about our trip to the dance, and how deep we are coming back and then make another run deep in the tourney. Then we can talk about history.
I'm curious to see where you put Hatch & Blair in your categories.

[quote="wufan"]In the 81-82 season (I believe) the starters were Randy Smithson, PG; Aubrey SherrodSG, HS All-American; Cliff Levingston, SF, Collegiate AA; Antoine Carr, PF, HS and College AA; Ozell Jones, center, NBA.

Off the bench was Xavier McDaniel, Collegiate AA; Greg Dreiling, 7-0 HS AA. That is 7 REALLY Deep players. I doubt we have two players on this years team that could match-up with the last two on the 82-83 team. quote]

Actually, Randy graduated in the spring of '81 before Sherrod, X and Dreiling arrived. Ozell's career here also ended in the spring of '81. The most common starting lineup in '81 - '82 was Tony Martin @ PG, Sherrod @ SG, Jay Jackson @ SF, AC @ PF and Cliff @ C. Dreiling often was 1st off the bench replacing Jackson with Cliff moving to the 4 and AC to the 3. Cliff didn't play the 3. He was no ball handler and couldn't shoot from outside while AC handled the ball very well, could shoot from outside and was quick enough to guard smaller 3's. Mike Jones was a sub at the 2 and sometimes the 3. James Gibbs backed up Tony at the 1. Papke was there, but I believe he missed much of that season.

Cliff played the 4 and 5. AC played the 3, 4 and 5. Dreiling played the 5. X played the 4. Jackson played the 3, Jones the 2 and 3. Sherrod the 2. Martin and Gibbs the 1. Zarco Dirisic also backed up at the 5.That's your top 10. As I said, Karl Papke was there, but it seems to me that he was injured a good portion of the season. I'll have to go back through my old programs to see who else was there, but that's a good start.

I love this year's team's potential, but they have a lot to prove to ever match the '81 -'82 team. AC = 16 years in the NBA. Cliff = 11 years in the NBA. X-Man = 12 years in the NBA. Greg Dreiling = 10 years in the NBA. Sherrod was drafted, but never played. From the '80 - '81 team, you can add Ozell Jones = 2 years NBA and Randy Smithson, drafted but never played.

I can understand getting excited about this team and the potential, but right now, that's all it is.

I witnessed the '81-'82 team and can personally advise Cap that they would eat the current WSU edition alive - for breakfast.

AC, Cliff, Dreiling and X were the most intimidating physical front line I've seen in basketball. They were just big, bad imposing paint monsters who flat out wore people down. By the middle of the second half, opponents were gasping for air, if not their jocks.

It was an awesome sight to watch, night in and out.

I'm not quite sure what Cap is drinking, but I've got a feeling in might be in a mason jar and is really clear. 8)
Above all, make the right call.

Absolutely! And after losing two of that front line group the next year (Cliff to the NBA and Greg to KU) the team lost only 3 games the following year, one by 1 point on the road. Carr missed some games early in '82 - '83 with a stress fracture and that helped one of those losses occur. The 1 point loss at Illinois State was the result of having to play against too many (players and referees combined) and AC was in foul trouble against Memphis (and Cliff Lee). Like you, I have never seen such an awesome front line as AC, Cliff, X and Dreiling in college basketball.

Thank you to everyone for clarifying the line-ups. I was only 3 in 81-82, and I only remember the tail end of X and Sherrod vaguely. Everything else I know pre-Paul Gaffrovich is just legend passed down from my Dad to me. Like, "Sure Jamie Arnold is good, but you should have see what (fill in the blank with X, Cliff, Antoine) did!" Same thing for Jabali, Stallworth, etc. The best I can tell is that Mo Evans was the only thing close to these guys talent-wise in the last 20 years.

True; however, I think John Cooper belongs in the discussion.

I understand your enthusiasm, but Jason, Randy, Jamar, Sean, Matt, Karon, Paul and Kyle (in 10 seconds off the top of my head) would have NO problem finding minutes on this team, and all were after Mo.

Now I do think that #7, #8 & #9 (players off the bench, whomever they may be) are as good or better, certainly more potential, than anyone in 25+ years is a fair statement.

Was this addressed to me? I agree that those players would have plenty of time on this squad.
