  • We have Some Weapons to play with...

this year, this is prolly the deepest team we have had since our sweet 16 run, and to think Clevin Hannah, our leading scorer last year didnt even play. I got a good feeling this is going to be a Fun Season. :wsu_posters:

I think we are deeper this year, than our Sweet 16 team was, and with more scorers than we had then.

That team had Miller and Wilson, which was a lethal combo that we don't have this year from out big men. This team make-up is much different than that team.

I share you guys' enthusiasm on this team. The only thing I see that sticks out negatively is our need to play more consistent defense. We do it for a while, but then relax and give up too many easy baskets. I know, most of that is beginning of the season jitters and freshmen mistakes, but if we're going to compete with the best teams in the country we need to make that the #1 priority. We have plenty of offensive weapons, and the potential for great defense is there.

I like it that our team seems very balanced offensively--which hopefully will make it difficult for teams to scout us. Having 5 guys that can score in double figures on any given night really helps. Plus, having guys that really can rebound--perhaps not as well as Ramon did, but having many guys able to pull down 4-6 rebounds a game is better than one player who pulls down 10.

Toure didn't miss a beat at the point--which makes me very hopeful for next year when Clevin is gone.

What's really scary is we only lose ONE after this season! That Maui tournament looks like it will be fun. This year will be great too.

We also don't have the perimeter shooting that team had (at least, not yet proven). Ogirri, Wilson, Breauer, Cooz, Bradley. Durley is skilled inside and can hit a few jumpers but isn't going to stretch the defense as well as Wilson. We have no shooter that can equal Ogirri.

And as has already been mentioned, defense.

Next year we are basically going to find out if we can attain the same type of success with athleticism
over skill. Not that we aren't skilled, but skill was the primary weapon of that 2006 team.

Unless we are a top 4 seed, the NCAA is a bit of a crapshoot so I am not going to get into a comparison, ever, that way.

I do think comparing general team abilities and how they perform relative to those abilities is fair.

Mark's teams were almost always good at defending the goal....really good. I think his teams account for more than half of the 10 best defensive FG% in the history of the program.

His teams needed to be good shooters because the price he paid for being so good defensively was that his teams got very few easy baskets. Almost none. You could count the number of breakaway layups on 1 hand.

Gregg's teams will sacrifice a bit of "protection" on defense to get some easy baskets....baskets that were somewhat numerous yesterday. This team probably won't get a lot of shot clock violations...but they are going to get some easy layups.

This team has a lot of pieces as someone said. What they need is leadership and heart.....I'm not questioning it, I am just saying that it needs to come to the foreground, yet.

This team did a LOT of things I believe to be crucial to big time success. I thought we shared the ball, I thought we played hard almost the entire 40 minutes and I thought we were mostly smart in our execution of our preparation. We have enough physical talent and basketball skill to succeed at a very high level.

IF we can find that 'X' factor, this team has every chance to be really, really good, this year.

Watching the replay last night, we were big, fast and physical. If we can be consistent and stay healthy (neither of which are guaranteed) we should be a nightmare for a variety of teams on our schedule.

We have no shooter to equal Ogirri, but none of our current guards are a defensive liability or as one dimensional. Bradley was very streaky, Breauer's 3 pt success was only his junior year, and Cooz was at best, only slightly above average from the 3.

Skill was important to the 2006 team, but its #1 key to success was its chemistry.

Amen. It will be interesting to see how the flow changes when Clevin gets back, as the floor general and the senior.

yup i agree, i actually think this team has more skill and talent, now only if they can get that chemistry together like that 2006 team had we will be a-ok

That's one thing that leads me to believe Hatch will actually be what helps propel this team to become VERY good. That doesn't mean I think that Hannah, Murry...etc won't be good leaders. I just think he is gonna turn into quite the leader and his heart is bound to rub off some. Every great team needs at least 1 Hatch on their team. I will have to go back and listen to sports sunday again, but I believe HCGM even stated that Hatch is becoming more vocal and more of a leader. Great things will happen when his leadership has fully evolved.

Sweet 16 team= not deep at all.

Remember having to use Nick Rodgers? He did a great job of the bench but...

If I remember correctly we had (and correct me if I'm wrong)....Wilson, Ogirri, Miller, Martin, Matty B, Bradley, Cooz.

Only 7 deep with scholarship players, it was a great team though no doubt.
