That is how I understand it.
If Butler doesn't play in any games at all then he will have another year of eligability I think. Ususally the medical redshirt comes into play for players like Funk that only played the first few games of the seaon before being injured. Every injury is looked at as a case by case basis.
But if he is in a position to come back with a good percentage of the season remaining, I don't think they will give it to him. Just keeping him out of games, even though he's healthy enough to play, probably won't fly with the NCAA.
    Royal is right.

To qualify for a medical redshirt (a la Funk), the player can't play in more than 20% of the games AND his injury must be season ending (in other words, the injury has to be what keeps the player out of games, not just a decision by the coaching staff). Medical documentation is required by the NCAA to substantiate the extent of the injury and the fact that it is season ending.

If "a la Funk -I think I will test my arm out for a while -oops we are losing nearly every game I play in so I guess I won't play anymore" can get a medical red-shirt, anybody can...

Good try, but lets get our facts straight shall we?

After "trying out his arm" after a period of recovery after the original injury, he underwent surgery because the shoulder was not healing properly.

Am I the only one not concerned with the 5?

It could be a mistake or maybe a message. The article doesn't say that Durley won't be a part of a rotation. It also says that a couple of other players need to step up in addition to the players that were listed.

Durley will play and if we have to go with a 3 man rotaion in the post I'm fine with that. Sure, I'd rather have 4 but if Butler can't go then it isn't going to happen until Orukpe gets here.

I am not concerned. I am not a believer in having to have a true 5, and we appear to have enough size and athleticism to defend the post. I was also not counting on AB for anything, so I am just as not concerned now as I was yesterday.

I think Butler would have gotten 3 to 6 minutes a game as a defense and rebound specialist. Would be nice to see him in there contributing, but not a huge loss.

man, that sucks for Arbry. From the articles, he seems to have his priorities in order and now this happens.....

If Butler was going to spend a lot of minutes at the 5, you should have been very concerned before his injury too.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

                          I'll second that Spangler!!

ASM, how are you not concerned with the 5? Everyone seems to be very concerned that our tallest player currently here is 6'8". Once EO arrives, many will calm down on their 5 spot worries, including me, but until then, we should all be concerned.

And the stock value continues to rise.
Don't count on freshmen who have either never played a D-1 game or even in the country. You've heard the ages old Al McGuire saying about freshmen becoming sophomores. Cheesy, but so very true.
I prefer to 5th year seniors to first year freshmen.
This team will go as PT goes. Book it. 8)
Above all, make the right call.

I'm a bit nervous about the 5, but I don't think AB's unfortunate injury changes anything at all. He wasn't going to be in the 8 or 9 man rotation anyway. That's even before Orupke shows up.

Outside of on the defensive side of the ball we dont really have a need for a 5.

HCGM did say defensive pressure is going to lead to more fast break points. And outside of what maybe 2 unproven players from other teams I dont see where we will have a matchup problem within the valley.
OOC is another subject and we may run into problems there BUT at least this year we are a bit deeper than last year Where the rotation was only PT Kyle and Ryan.
The only thing Ehimen brings if he shows up is height. Now granted thats a very good thing BUT height didnt help out somebody like POB and Ehimen is/will be a unknown commodity and any speculatiion about is merely he 7 feet tall. He might be the second coming of Manute Bol or worse yet the black Shawn Bradley.

With someone as physical as Ramo is down low a 5 doesnt concern me that much. If Durley pans out he is as good a candidate as anybody
