I'm a little late getting back here, but I did attend last night. It was a pretty good time and you guys pretty much summed up everything.
I was also disappointed in the FREE event. It was poorly marked however and the Eagle wasted front page space on D-2 level area football teams and their "big" games against Texas A&M and such. Normally, the event gets some nice front page pub.
Overall, I was impressed for a first "scrimmage." November can't get here soon enough.

Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

I am extremely fired up about this year's team, although not because I believe the team will dominate. Simply because I believe we will continue to see more glimpses of what to expect next year.
Yes, we saw some amazing things last night. As everyone stated, DK was awesome! Will that translate to him being a force in the Valley. I really don't know. Often, a player makes great strides during his sophomore year, but often the sophomore jinx hits as well. Will DK's obvious athleticism allow him to elbow Graham Hatch's experience and toughness? We'll see. I expect most of the ShockerNet faithful to be 100% behind DK versus Hatch, but I will personally trust Coach Marshall to know better who will really help bring more victories to the team regardless of who looks more exciting. One thing I am convinced of is that DK will be a major factor before he leaves WSU. I hope it is this year.
As do all teams, we have those who are convinced that they are great judges of talent on this board. Presonally, I doubt that we have anyone with more knowledge than the coaching staff. I really look forward to seeing how they judge the talent and how many wins can be coaxed from this group.
I am guessing 19 - 21 wins with real improvement coming late in the season again. The major issue is that while the Shockers have improved the talent level a great deal, so have a number of other Valley teams. I do expect the Shocker to completely jell in the 2010 - 2011 season.
Shocker Madness was great and I was impressed, but it was still just a scrimmage. It means nothing until the real season starts.
I was at madness and I think there are very few things that can be said definitively from it. I think some of us have gleaned too much from it but we are all so glad and excited to see what the team can do that we can't be blamed for that. My take:
All the veterans will be fine, Toure, Clevin, JT, Hatch, Ellis and Kyles.
I have always thought that the sky is the limit for Kyles so it didn't surprise me and he has clearly grown! I couldn't even find him when they took the court because I was looking for someone shorter. He seemed much taller and much more confident and poised on the court and let the game come to him.
Blair seems ready to make his contribution.
Manigault will play a lot and he will help us win.
I don't redshirt Richardson because anyone who can stroke 3 balls in his first time on stage can probably help us. Besides, I don't think you recruit a whole hell of a lot of guards so that you can redshirt them. Big men can be projects but only in special circumstances should guards be redshirted.
Stutz will probably contribute a little more each year and hopefully his junior and senior years will be very productive but he is still trying to get strength to his extremities and doesn't have full control. Thus he is still a bit slower afoot and a little bit slower to grab bounds.
Hamilton may or may not play a lot as a freshman, hard to tell yet.
We will play 10 guys.
I love our starting five and it is going to be Clevin, Toure, Kyles, Durley and Blair.
I'm leaving my expectations right where they were. Madness didn't look like the level of ball some might have expected based on last year and assumed improvement from last year.
But...
...the guys were D'ing it up pretty well. Tough D tends to lead to ugly ball and I think a lot of the apparent negatives were the result of some salty D that thwarted some offense.
I thought the D looked more like an early season game than like a beginning of practice scrimmage.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades. We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.
I just hope it is the tough D that is forcing us to clang so many shots. If that is the case, we will be very good! If we just refuse to shoot the ball well this year, we will see very modest improvement in the win/loss column.
My favorite sequence from last night was KM with a bucket and then immediately forcing a turnover on the following inbounds pass. His D will be fun to watch.
Conversely, the new and stronger Clevin didn't seem to have too much trouble with KM. Clevin and Stutz both looked more physically solid to me than last year.
Richardson doesn't look like a frosh, either by how he plays or by his build.
Ellis looked healthy, happy, and more aggressive. He reminded me of how he looked at the end of his Frosh year.
Gabe is a physical speciman. He would have helped against Georgetown, Michigan St., and Stanford last year.
DK was great, quicker than I remembered. Hatch was solid and his shot looked better. Toure was kind of quiet. I see these three as sharing time at the 2 and 3 with Hatch playing mostly 3 and Toure mostly 2. I think DK will be fine at either spot. He may be one of those 6th man types who brings instant offense off the bench.
JT's gonna be just fine. He looked kind of bored with the event last night, like he was waiting for the real season to start.
Felter would probably have gotten some quality minutes a few years back. He's got some size and he moves pretty good; however, barring injury or foul trouble, I don't see him getting much time with JT, Gabe, Ellis, and Stutz in the mix.
I always wondered what happened to Derek Brown. Glad to see him back on the team.
Mayes was definately bothered by KM's D but he also played with some poise. It will be interesting to see how he develops.
All: Grammar? (1) This is a message board not a creative writing class; (2) correcting all the grammar mistakes on this board (including mine) would be a full time job; and (3) remember everyone, including our self-proclaimed grammar “experts”, will make mistakes. Personally, I only get aggravated when I find a post absolutely unreadable.
