  • Shocker Madness impressions

Didn't see a topic yet...if so just delete this one.

I am not as good at breaking stuff down as some others so I will let them do so.

I will say though....David Kyles = MVP tonight. Not that it means alot, but he pretty much shut down Murry and did a variety of things on offense. I'm just glad he didn't knock himself out by hitting his head on the backboard during the dunk contest LOL

Also alot of people had a hard time finishing their shots except for Kyles and Hannah. But that could have been due to the defense, or the fact they have practiced 2-3 times within the last 24 or so hours. Ellis looked pretty good too on both sides. But then again, it was just a scrimmage. So hard to tell if that will translate to games.

    Agree 100% on Kyles.

Kenny was impressive with his D and taking it to the rack.

Ellis pretty solid rebounding the ball.

Who was the kid with no number of the white team?

Yeah "Goat" (that is what he had written on his name plate during autographs) is really quick and stays on his man PRETTY good. He lost Clevin a couple times, but some of it was due to picks and plus....Hannah is just feisty LOL.

I never could figure out who that kid was with no number either.

Richardson can shoot it from long range.

            No doubt about DK.

Aaron did look biggeer and stronger and knocked down a nice 3-ball.

Kenny is the real deal. May not be much a perimeter threat but he can get to the rack and he will cause a lot of headaches defensively.

Tyler Richardson looked pretty good hitting a couple of treys.

Toure' seemed to find his stroke a little better in the 2nd 15 minutes.

Gabe Blair will be a very solid 4-man in the MVC.

Garrett looks better and stronger. Hit a very nice baseline hook over JT and was much more aggressive on the boards.

I see redshirts for Jerome Hamilton and Demetric Williams.

I don't know who the mystery player was. I don't think they have let JC back on the team.

Biggest disappointment was the crowd. Perhaps the lowest turnout yet for a Shocker Madness event.

Shocks will be competitive this year.

Talked with Gabe Blair at the Cancer Walk. He said they want 2 wins when the travel to KC in November.

There are better at evaluating BB talent than me, but I'll give it a go.

Kyles - All-Valley if he plays a season like he played tonight. Hitting 3's. Going to the hoop with some acrobatics I couldn't figure out to get there and score. He scored A LOT!

Stutz - Improving nicely. Gets around quicker. Doesn't seem to be playing in slow motion. Gave Durley fits when Durley had the rock. I thought he outplayed Durley tonight. Stutz needs to go after boards more aggressively. He was leaving too many boards for others.

Blair - If he's going to replace what Clemente put on the floor, there needs to be some progress in the next couple of weeks. I wasn't impressed by what I saw when I wasa watching his play. He's OK, but looks to need some work.

Murry - Was Murry. Got his share of about everything you'd expect from him.

Hannah - Whoa! Looks like he wants to go out in style in his Sr. year. Lookin' good.

Manigault - He's fast, has great moves going to the hole, is a ball-hawking defender looking for steals. It was easy to see how he got his high turnover numbers. He's willing to take risjs with passes and with penetration. Those risks didn't always work.

              Ellis - Typical Ellis game.

Hamilton - Who? I never did figure out who he was. I didn't think he was noticeable.

Hatch - Looked real good on the 3 he hit. Didn't do a lot of obvious things. Doesn't look like a 1st team all-Valley player. May have to fight for his spot with what Kyles did.

Durley - Didn't look like he was really into the scrimmage. I thought Stutz outplayed him.

Richardson - We got ourselves a maker.

Overall, the scrimmage looked more like a D1 game than a street pickup gaame. Basket ball skills and IQ were more important than one-on-one moves and showboating.

We got some guards who can hit shots!

The D is looking tough. Both teams were strong on D.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I agree with the redshirts...at least off of this quick first impression. And Stutz did play better and stronger than last year. Seemed to hold on to the ball pretty well also. Would still like to see him go to the hoop a little stronger, but he was still ALOT stronger overall.

I think, and it is in no way a knock on him, that Jerome may be the best RS candidate besides Demetric Williams.

Stutz and Durley will share time at the 5.
Blair and Ellis will share time at the 4.
Hatch and Richardson will share time at the 3. (Brainfart and had Hamilton here)
Murry and Kyles will share time at the 2.
Hannah and Manigault will share time at the 1.

Our inside guys were looking pretty good. Our guards can shoot. Hatch and Richardson were both knocking down 3's. Hannah and Manigault both looked very good defensively.

I think, since it has been discussed recently, that the heights have been adjusted on some, but maybe close but not right. From eye level:

Hatch and Richardson are both solid 6'4 players built strong that don't take too much to pushing. Murry is 1/2 inch or so shorter than these 2, and Kyles about 1/2 shorter than Murry.

And how about the ladies team. Those who follow womens are going to love Jessica Diamond. Her defense is tough, her passing was good, and she can shoot. Couple other really good shooters also: Morgan Boyd and Haleigh Lankster.

By next year don't be surprised if we aren't the best team in the Valley.

At the player intros, the "unknown" player came down the tunnel right before Hannah. He was not announced when he came onto the court.

I would agree with all that was said, except in regards to JT. I thought he was ok, but just couldn't get any of his shots to fall. He had some nice turnaround moves (similar to what we've seen before) but none went in. I think that will change. Toure was much the same until the second 15 minutes, where he started hitting shots.

KM--It's interesting to see him pass the ball. about 1/4 of the time the man he's passing to seems surprised that he's passing to them--like they're not quite ready, but I think that's mostly because of how he passes--very unexpected, he give the term 'no-look' a new meaning! This is a good thing, or at least I think it will be as soon as he gets comfortable with his team mates and they with him.

DK was great. I hope he can bottle up that energy and athleticism and use it come conference play time!

Agree with the redshirt for Hamilton. He is behind the other big men.

Hard to say anything about Dementric as he did not play.

Tyler R. did hit some good shots. Playing time will be limited this year so I bet he is a redshirt cannidate also.

Here is my impressions by player with my grades:

                          A - Well Exceeded expectations
                          B - Exceeded
                          C - Meet Expectations
                          D - Didn't meet expectations

0 Ellis - B, looked more confident and had a nice block.

2 Manigault B+, he caught everybody eye around me. He seems very quick and looks like he can challenge the passing lanes

3 Hannah B, looked like he's taking over where he left off now with a proven track record

4 Hamilton C, He never really caught my eye.

                          5. Williams C, never noticed him

11 Felter C, Didn't come with any high expectations and left with none.

14 Hatch C, did impress me one way or the other. Didn't take enough shots to see if it's much more improved or not.

22 Richardson B, he looked to like the purest shooter on the team to me.

23 Murry C+, I was hoping to see a much improved shot, though he seemed to be getting his touch later in the scrimmage

24 Kyles A, He dominated and if the scrimmage is any indication he's going to be a force.

31 Durley C, he pretty much met my expectations. Seemed more confident and leader like.

32 Blair B, He looks to be a contributor on the boards and has a better shot than Clemente.

                          33 Mayes C, no expectations

41 Stutz C-, Frankly I was hoping to see a more improvement. He did seemed more physical (him and Durley were pushing each other pretty good), but he seemed more comfortable outside than inside.

Sorry Downtown, Hamilton isn't a 3 by any stretch of the imagination.
