I don't think I would say hot seat, warm seat might be a better description considering HCGM's Winthrop record, and the fact that this class is truly his recruits. Expectations are higher than the past, and part of that is because of Turgeon's improved record each year except the last season, plus the quality of HCGM's coaching.

It all boils down to performance on the court......period If he has 23 wins this season (a good improvement over last season), then things will be okay, and I believe we would finish better than 5th in the league (like it has been predicted in preseason polls).

I know I am expecting a top 4 finish this season. How our new recruits will play out remains to be seen. I know I am anxious to see them in person play, so I can gather a better idea of how our team will develop this year.

I think the Valley is a much tougher league than the Big South, and HCGM has learned that now. Now, he needs to show us something this season.

I think Marshall team have to show good progress this year or he will start to hear some open "critiscism" from the fans and media.

If WSU can't finish ahead of the UNI, EU, Drakes, Indy states of the conference then there is no real need to pay a coach "winner" $$ for subpar performances.

          Good heavens

Ashock has nailed it. This is based on the ramblings of a writer who needs something to fill space and be a little provocative (think Bob Lutz on dozens of occasions).

It may be the silliest thread since Dofo left the building, and having said that much, I won't waste any more time on it.

I agree, except for the part about Dofu, I sort of miss his unique prose and opinion:

[The Officials at the bradley game] were horrible......they wore blind in both eyes and deaf in 1 ear. I seen a ambulance after the game hopefully it was one of the refs....gal mekel was looking to kill one of them and so were the fans...tonights refs were mentally retarted and Bradleys coach slipped the refs a couple hundreds before the game....i hope u enjoyed reading my opinon of the refs.

P.S They should go to bradley and never come back.
....i hope u enjoyed reading my opinon of the refs.
              I certainly did.

The NIT is harder to get into than the past. With the NCAA running it and the fact that all regular season champs that don't get invited to the big dance get an automatic bid causes there to be less "at large" bids. Really we only have a chance at the NIT if we finish top 2 and don't make the big dance. So 20 wins may only get us back to the CBI really.

I think this is a perfectly legitimate topic - at what point is success expected from Marshall lead teams.

                  2008 11-20
                  2009 16-17
                  2019 ?

Cohen was in trouble after his 3rd year:

                  1990 10-19
                  1991 14-17
                  1992 8-20 (FIRED)

Scott Thompson in trouble after his 4th year:

                  1993 10-17
                  1994 9-18
                  1995 13-14
                  1996 8-21 (FIRED)

                  Smithson after his 4th
                  1997 14-13
                  1998 16-15
                  1999 13-17
                  2000 12-17 (FIRED)

I think most believe that Marshall team is much better than Cohen/Thompson/Smithson team - but then again they are yet to prove it on the floor.

The wild card is chemistry. Nobody can predict it and we all know that chemistry is very important and have seen what can happen to even a NCAA tournament team when chemistry turns bad (2006 vs 2007 team under Turgeon)

We see progress and the recruiting results alone give him time. I expect this year to be a good one, but it's next season that he'll have to have this team show what they're made of.

                    I'm not worried.

In my judgment, from the outside looking in, this discussion is very premature – CGM is no where near a “hot seat”. I know there are vocal people in Wichita who possess very short fuses when it comes to WSU basketball; however, realistically at this stage, CGM will be around a minimum two years, probably three.

If his teams don’t perform up to expectations, etc. beginning EO's first year – then this would be a justifiable topic.

The stats do not reflect the quality of the returning and new players.

Another comparison, which you might consider, is Coach Smithson's, Coach Thompson's and Coach Cohen's third year players to Coach Marshall's third year players.

As always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I am pretty sure Reggie Smithson is a minus. (Just throwing in some light humor.)

If Coaches Smithson, Thompson and Cohen resigned after year two, I believe most would say they left the cupboard pretty bare.

On the other hand, if Coach Marshall resigned today, few, if any, would say he left the cupboard bare.

I guess I lied. I said I was done with this topic, but Todd Corleone pulled me back in.

I think the hottest seat GM is on at this point is his own. The guy knows what he wants and his expectations for the program are probably as high as anyone's. He isn't used to .500 seasons. He is used to being at a high level in his conference.

The program is in good hands. The worst thing that could happen is instability or even the thought. Whoever wrote that GM is in the hot seat is uneducated on our program at best. At worst, they are professionally inept.

I don't think any Valley coach is on the hot seat as far as losing their job would go this year. I think the two teams expecting the best rebound from last year are WSU and SIU. Those guys are making pretty good bucks for coaching basketball, with the strength of the returnee's and the strength of the incoming class. Whe it comes to head to head meetings, I'm putting my money on Marshall to show why be pay him the big bucks and SUI to wonder why they pay Lowery the big bucks.

It's just too early for talk like that. Freeman was out last night. We know what it's like without Clevin.

I know there are questions, but the expectations are unreal over there. They could be GREAT and not repeat the run from 01-07.

The biggest mistake he has made is signing the highest rated recruiting class in the history of mankind.
