Actually, the vast majority of KU fans are very complimentary of WSU, understand the significance of competing against WSU in baseball and generally root for the Shox in basketball.

The fact that you try to equate Ft. Hays State to WSU in the minds of KU fans kind of lessens WSU - don't ya think?

As far as the two teams playing eachother, I hope they don't unless it's on a big stage for something meaningful. It'd be nice to see KU play at IBA in Wichita, but frankly I kind of like a Sweet 16, Elite 8, or Final 4 matchup. Make it count for something other than a regular season game.

I completely disagree. I live among "them" in Lawrence East (KC), and the only complimentary sign I've seen is that of the little forgotten step-child. They might root for the Shox in basketball, but more under the condition that they "know" little ole Wu will never put up a fight.

In other words, they just really don't get it.

I absolutely agree with this. My wife's family lives up by KC and have been KU fans forever. This year, my son had a birthday cake with a big WU in the center of it. After my son blew the candles out, my brother-in-law made some smart-aleck comment that I didn't hear and smeared his finger through the middle of it. So my son didn't get to eat the piece with WU on it. He was pretty upset about that.

I feel this is pretty typical of KU fans. They are snobby and look down on us more than they support us.

        • Your bro-in-law needed to wear the center of that cake on his face. Out of respect for forum rules I helped establish, I won't say what I think he is.

Well, fortunately I have not come across that kind of behavior. That is pretty bad. Just curious, did he actually go to KU or just a "fan"? I'm speaking of those that actually graduated from KU and general students on campus.
Your sister's husband sounds like a real jerk. If you PM me with your address and your kid's shirt size, I'll be more than happy to mail you a WU shirt you can give him on behalf of the majority of KU alumns who actually understand and respect WSU's athletic history and traditions.

                    • the record

Let me just set the record straight. I used Fort Hays as an example in my reply because KSU fans get treated better.. KU and KSU seem to have a joking hatred for one another that doesn't actually exist. The last time I was in Lawrence, I had some guy get out of his car on Mass. street and ask me why the !@## I was wearing a WSU hat. Then I went to the friends house I was visiting. At first they asked questions about WSU, then the questions got stupid and insulting. It was strange, but I got the sense that it was indeed because of insecurity. Insecurity because the two schools are not in the same conference and are 3 hours apart.

                      • It’s been a few years (shortly after S16 run) since I’ve shared this story but it seems appropriate within this thread. At the end of a flight from Chicago to Boston I’m waiting on the jetway for a stroller and the guy standing next to me was wearing a KU shirt. So I asked him where he was from and what he did. It turns out he was a young (30-something) KU associate AD. Since we had time to burn I threw it out there and asked him when they were going to schedule WSU. (Paraphrasing here)…”Probably never. Some schools just don’t play one another. For example when I was with Lew at Uconn we never played Central Conn St.” At the end of the brief conversation my wife (who is clueless about anything sports related) said “geez that guy was kind of short with you.”

                            • Kind of funny how my friends who go to WSU mentioned that their professors have dissed KU basketball during lecture. Talk about an inferiority complex.
