    $$$

Interesting that four of the six (non-Memphis) bigger spenders outside the power conferences are in the MWC, which looks to be a league with high aspirations.

Judging from their consistent success, Xavier seems to be a good target for WSU to emulate. That would also put the Shocks at the top of the Valley, a bit ahead of Creighton. Interesting, too, that Notre Dame is down the list as far as they are -- as well as Gonzaga, which has to be right at or near the top in bang for the buck.

Gonzaga is #93 at 2.586 rounding up a bit. So dollars spent doesn't appear to correspond exactly to success or perceived image of the team.

Great article on a school that draws 10,000 a game that used to be called a mid major, but now makes annual sweet 16 runs. Shows what can happen: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketb...yhoo&type=lgns

Pay attention to the first quote. There is not any particular reason for the second quote, but it is interesting and one of my favs.
Mine too! You're a wise man RDR.

The topic of this thread has jumped around, so what the heck...

I’ve been investing my heart and soul into Shocker basketball since the mid-60’s and have lived through many ups and downs. I consider myself a long time stockholder in the program. The arrow is no doubt pointing upward again. I wished for a .500 season and my wish came true. I made the trek to St. Louis… we actually finished the season 18-16 and exceeded my expectations. I was ‘tickled as punch’ to be playing in any post season tournament of any kind. Do I wish for the CBI every year? NO, but we were still playing while many others were wishing they were.

I completely understand Cold’s passion and applaud him for it. I still hurt inside with every loss and sometimes I wonder why I can’t seem to control my feelings. It still takes me a couple of days to overcome a tough loss… as you can imagine; I was a sick ‘SOB’ during most of the 90’s. But not as sick as I was when the NCAA put the ‘hammer down’ on us in the early 80’s. Believe me Cold (and any other youngsters who posts here), I (we) don’t ever want to go down that road again. I’d much rather finish the season at .500 then to live through another NCAA investigation and the subsequent embarrassment that comes with it… and please don’t give me the “we only gave him a winter coat” standard reply. Just be very careful what you wish for (RDR hit the nail on the head). Today, I wear my Shocker apparel and proudly display my Shocker license tag (every Shocker fan should have one of these) with pride. I continue to appreciate the kind of young men that coach Turgeon and coach Marshall have brought into the program. We’ve always had quality student athletes at WSU with the exception of a few bad apples here and there, but I don’t ever want to lower our standards and recruit ‘questionable’ kids like has been suggested… that happened during the 90’s and caused part of our downfall IMO. I don’t have a problem taking a chance on a player; however I don’t want a player (regardless of their talent level) that will tarnish the name of our great university and sacrifice our integrity.

As I’ve told many people, it’s very easy to be a KU basketball fan… you’re going to be happy 90-95% of the time. I firmly believe that a ‘Shocker’ fan is one of the most resilient fans in the country… we (us) continue to show tremendous loyalty during difficult times. We’re like the old Timex watches, "We take a licking and keep on ticking." I’m an optimist and will NEVER give up hope for the future. There are better days ahead... and we will be rewarded for our incredible loyalty… “I guarantee it!”

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Only four power-conference schools spend less than us. Only six teams outside the power conferences, not including Memphis, spend more. Surprisingly, TCU is the highest spending of those six at $4.75 million (#37).

Gonzaga is at 93 with $2.58 million.

              Valley Rankings
              64 - Creighton, $3.6 mil
              76 - WSU, $3.1 mil
              83 - Bradley, $2.9 mil
              103 - SIU, $2.1 mil
              124 - Drake, $1.9 mil
              134 - MSU, $1.8 mil
              141 - Evansville, $1.7 mil
              158 - UNI, $1.5 mil
              171 - Illinois St., $1.4 mil
              189 - Indiana St., $1.3 mil

Yeah, quite surprised to see the Redbirds that low, and Drake that high.
These are phony-baloney numbers. Take the "revenue" associated with the Qwiet and Creighton drops down quite a bit. Drake's numbers quickly delegitimize these stats. Nobody in the Valley spends as much (minus rent) on their basketball program as Wichita State.

OMG! Those numbers are really phony...

Duke at 15mm and Syracuse at 6.8? Think about that for a moment and the facilities that each team utilizes and the regional location they reside in...

Perhaps the extra 8.2 mm is used to get the Cameron Crazies all coke'd up before the game so they will bounce up and down for 40 minutes. :)

Those numbers seemed odd to me too.

What exactly is TCU buying in order to have a nearly $5 million budget?

A good find HS... some similar comparisons and attainable goals for our program... with this exception:

                      Amazing

Nothing like Cold's quick, totally unsupported, yet utterly confident, matter-of-fact conclusion that the numbers compiled by Basketball State are phony.

Life must be very easy when you don't need to deal in facts or analysis and can just make snap judgments based on your own eyeball conclusions. With normal folks, one might expect to receive at least some basis for the skepticism -- but with Cold, no such basis is required. Just the assumption that they're phony is good enough.

It's still a great day to be a moron!

I wouldn't call the numbers phony, but I agree that we should take a moment to think about what the numbers actually mean. The source of the data, the office of postsecondary education, recommends that we do the same, as they note on their website:

"Please note that valid comparisons of athletics data are possible only with study and analysis of the conditions affecting each institution."

So does anybody know why Duke had such a huge budget? I can't imagine that free blow for all the students could cost much more than $1 mil. Did they do any facility renovations recently that were represented in this year's budget? How do these numbers compare to years past?
