  • CU student here

Hi everyone, I know many of you will look at my username and write me off as a jerk right away so first of all I just want to say that I come in peace. I am a senior at Creighton this year and have been a diehard CU fan my entire life. I wanted to register to this site just to give you a little different and honest perspective from a student at another Valley school. Maybe some of you don't care, and if that is the case I apologize.

First of all I just want to say that I respect your program and your team. I know you guys haven't had the success recently that many of you would like but I truly believe that will change soon. I expect you to annually be in the top 3-4 in the conference year in, year out. With a decent ciy and great atmoshere there is no reason why you shouldn't have a top 3 team every year starting in 2 years, possibly even next.

I know alot has been said on here the past couple days about the behavior of CU fans and specifically students. I don't disagree that there were alot of out of control CU fans this year. However, to be fair, we had about 10 times the amount of students as every other team at the tournament. Obviously college students are going to be more rowdy than the average fan for the most part, so I really don't think it is that surprising that we were viewed as the "craziest" and most out of control fanbase. Add that to the fact that the WSU fans were basically sitting right next to our students, along with the fact of how crazy our game was with you guys, I don't think it was that crazy to expect this type of behavior out of a huge drunk college student section. If I were to guess, I would say that there was between 3 and 4 thousand CU fans down in STL compared to maybe 1200 Shocker fans. Matt P guessed today on the radio that there were over 5000 of us down there, but I don't know about that. Anyway, moral of the story is that yes, there were alot of crazy Creighton students down in STL who were doing things that weren't respectful. Some of it may have been downright embarrassing. However, I guess I just ask all of you to realize that the percentage of fans doing these things was very minimal and it doesn't represent to even close to the majority of what our fanbase and program are all about. I hope some of you actually believe this, although I know most of you are not very fond of anything CU and probably don't want to hear this.

Anyway, sorry for the rant that went a little longer than it probably should have but I just wanted to give you all a little different perspective on this topic. I love the Valley. The better you guys become, the more fun it will be to follow our conference. I wish more teams in our conference had fanbases with as much passion as our two teams have. I wish you all nothing but the best next season, and I truly mean that. I would love for the Valley to get back to where it was a few years ago, and I really think it can with the young wave of talent there is around the league. I will be checking back on this site and posting occasionally. Again, sorry for the rant but hopefully you guys can welcome a different perspective to this forum!

Looks like we're fresh out of perspective... Can I interest you in some roasted Blue Jay? Served fresh 2-3 times a year for years to come?

Lay off the guy. He makes a valid point, there are always bad apples in the bunch.

For once I agree with you KC... I actually visited with several CU fans (yes they were older fans) and they were completely respectful before and after THE GAME. A couple of them even said we got 'hosed' by the slowest 1.9 seconds in history. I'm still upset with some of their students for the way they treated us, but I refuse to hold it against their entire fan base. There were also a few Shocker fans that I would liked to have 'kicked in the grapes'.

I know a guy who is a CU fan and a decent guy. You sound like a good guy yourself. Unfortunately for you and for every fan base, you are judged by the actions of your fellow fans.

Are the majority of the students that go to CU Catholic? Because that is no way to represent a Catholic University.

I appreciate the thought, and I agree with most of your points.

CU had a ton of people there. By far the most of any school and way more students than any other school by at least 3 times. No way 5k but I expect that kind of stupid comment from Matt.

As I said in another thread it was in no way a majority of the fans. A few bad apples DOES however spoil the bunch.

And frankly, while I appreciate the effort, if you're going to come on the other guy's board, perhaps instead of trying to convince us that the CU fan base isn't like that, mention that we might not care what you have to say (insulting our ability to understand, not once but several times in your post) and try to dismiss some of the problem on us, perhaps you could have been a bit more conciliatory and chastize those in your group that were way out of line.

I wouldn't hesitate to do the same to our fans.

              Good luck down the road.

I'm with you on this one KC!

The last time my parents went to St. Louis, after a game my mother was knocked over by a mob of Creighton fans.....college kids, intoxicated, rude, foul mouthed. She was informed that she needed to get the "bleep" out of the way old lady. My father in his late 60's wanted to thump them, when a group of 10 or 12 CU students, ran to their aid apologizing profusesly for the actions of several others.

They did their best to make the best of a bad situation! Checked on my Mom's well being, stayed with my Dad until the thugs were gone and made a positive impression on a couple of folks who needed their help.

Mom still hates Creighton, but always talks about the polite young students who helped them. :good:

I agree as well with KC.

Not ALL of them are sCUm. It just seems like we always hear and see the vocal minority, which tend to be douchy.

                  Thanks for the insight CUstudent.

I agree about the catholic school comments. Why even go to a catholic college if you're gonna represent the institution like that? You'd figure it would have even more 'good eggs'.

CUstudent could probably teach coach Dana a thing or two about giving credit when credit is due. He has issues with that.

We do appreciate your perspective CUstudent, though I'm sure there will be more jabs forthcoming towards your coach, the drunken fans and the program in general.

I'll just say this - concentrate on doing whatever you can to help Dana move his program forward because I guarantee you right now that this young, talented Shocker program is loaded for bear towards beating Altman's a$$ so badly that his grandchildren will feel it. At this point, beating CU will now rank right up there with beating LSU again and beating the other allegedly superior BCS teams we will play.

Maybe it's not fair since it was the timekeeper's fault, and the Valley office will protect him. However, they cannot keep Creighton off our schedule. The Shox may not win every game, but I will predict that Altman will be lucky to go .500 against WSU for the next several years.

So keep cheering for CU whether you are drunk or not. Altman's charges will need every bit of help you can give him.

The only solid fact I could find about the amount of Catholic kids at Creighton was based off the 2008 freshman class, 58% of which are Catholic. So no, not a huge population of Creighton's students are Catholic. And replying to a different response, I don't think I ever insulted WSU fan's ability to understand. I was simply stating that I know there is alot of hate toward CU on this board, and I wasn't sure how much positive feedback I was going to get. I apologize if this came off the wrong way. Also, I mentioned a few times that I agreed that CU fans were out of line. There was no doubt about that, and I have nothing to say to stick up for that type of behavior, I just think it happens all the time around sporting events everywhere.

                          CU

Call it a rivalry or just call it hatred, it's on like donkey kong.

I can't stand watching that hyperbaric chamber sleeping coach walk up and down the side line with his standard white shirt and blue tie. I swear Daltman sold his soul to Father Flanagan when he arrived in Buggaha.

THis is what makes college sports special - irrational emotional investment in sports where we have very little influence on the outcome.

                            Agreed.

There are so many things that I would like to say at this time, but I feel that Karma is on our side right now, and, well, I don't want to mess that up.

CUStudent, I'm sure is a fine kid. Misguided, but fine. But hey, nothing a little confession can't fix, eh?

I once went onto the BlueJay cafe and tried to start a discussion. The reception was about the same as what you are receiving now. Best of luck to CU next year.
