Re: New 2009 post season tournaments

The problem with your theory is that you assume this will be a fair process, and that they are looking for the best teams left, all other things aside.

Some teams will not participate. Others will be left out due to fact that the CBI will not give a home game to American and their 4500 seat gym that will probably be half empty when they can have a Wichita State and their 10,500 strong buying tickets.

They can't afford to be fair. They have to make money or they will fail, and cease to exist.[/quote]

Which is why if WSU has a winning record, they'd almost be assured of playing in one of the two tournaments. 10,500 fans and their money will always be taken more seriously than a team with half that and an RPI of 25 higher.

Last year, Tulsa had to pay $60,000 per home game to host each CBI tournament game they played in. I think financially, they broke even...but that was an exception for most of the teams who were in the CBI.

I didn't propose a theory, only a debunking of wushock's claim that by any objective measure we could be considered one of the top 129 teams and even then, 129 isn't really on target.

Just because you're in the range of 1-129 in rpi doesn't mean you will make it in. I can't remeber completely but one or two years ago, a valley team had an rpi in the 20's and didn't make it to the big dance.

I believe that was a team with an RPI of 21 that didn't make it. They had the highest RPI of all the MVC schools that year, and 4 other teams made it. That is why the RPI is a joke when used in the selection process.

I may be wrong about this, but I believe a team can practice up until the day of the National Championship, whether they are still playing games or not. I think Bob Knight used to have his IU teams practice full until the last possible day, no matter how they fared in the postseason.

That being said, despite the fact that for 99% of the sporting world the CBI and CollegeInsider tournaments (and the NIT for that matter) are in the category of who gives a flip, keeping this team playing in game situations is well worth it. Plus, if we have a home game or two, I stand a better chance of sitting lower, just like I did for the Florida State game a few years back!

$60000 = pocket change for WSU.

Figure 10K at an average of $15 for a ticket and $60K doesn't hurt much.

Just as a comparative, here are last year's CBI teams and their RPIs. (Again, I'm not advocating that these are or should be used for selection.)

                    105 - Bradley
                    106 - Brown
                    118 - Cinci
                    80 - Houston
                    73 - Miami (OH)
                    74 - Nevada
                    82 - Ohio
                    129 - Old Dominion
                    120 - Richmond
                    109 - Rider
                    93 - Tulsa
                    96 - Utah
                    102 - UTEP
                    97 - Valpo
                    127 - Virginia
                    121 - Washington

If there is even a loose correlation, then a victory over SIU and one win in the Valley tournament could get us in the ballpark. And as others have previously mentioned, that $60k cost to host may cause some teams to turn down an invite.

Non-national championship post-season tourney's are moot. That being said, if one is afforded the opportunity to develop one's underclassmen and said opportunity is not taken, the "offending" individual(s) are grossly negligent!

I can talk theory all day but won't because I am tired of typing on my crackberry!

It would be GREAT to get a major program into our barn. We would rock out with our $%#@'s out and have a helluva time!

Often times I get different levels of play mixed and confused. I am going to look into this......ty SB.

All college tournaments are about money...sometimes politics but always money. For us though it extends our season and allows coach to continue developing this young team...I think another 2 or 3 games makes a nice difference.

" Ive never seen a foul parade like that...If you would of let me know it was going to be a foul parade I would of brought a different team" .... "dont talk to me about fouls....Ive got to go back and look at some tape... I have some thoughts but I need to look at the tape and then I will have something very strong to say"
