  • Guard situation - David Kyles

Most of this season I've been wondering where Kyles would eventually fit in. He wasn't a ball-handler, though he can do a little in a pinch. He wasn't a natural shooter. And he's undersized for a small forward.

It seems all three positions may be covered for the forseeable future (Manigault, Murry, Hatch/Coy). But to say I've been impressed with his shooting lately would be an understatement. He looks confident in his shot and he's knocking them down. In the last five games he is 8-11 (3-4 3FG). A small sample size, but backed up by his obvious improvement as the season has progressed.

Murry has the size and versatility to play some minutes at PG and SF, which would allow Kyles more minutes at SG.

Do we have a "super sixth-man" on our hands?

I think that could be a perfect discription of David. I see him getting lots of minutes from here on out as a do everything 6th man.

MikeShox, I pulled your reply out of the quoted text. -RS

I don't know about the "super" part, but his play and confidence is improving. The curve is heading upward at a 30 degree angle.

He has a certain coolness about him.

Clearly, when he is on the floor, he is a superior athlete as compared to others.

He has some common sense too. I saw him drive the baseline on the north end. The traffic got heavy. He put on the brakes and backed it out. Most players would have kept on charging into a well....charging call.

He is shooting well. His shots look pure too. No luck bounces. (I hope I have not jixed him here.)

Recently, he was in the game at crunch time. It was either the UNI or MSU game.

I think his stock is rising with Coach Marshall.

I have noticed that Kyles works at creating something on Offense, and like Murry, he is not afraid to take an open shot. Some of his 3's have been big shots during the games.

He has an explosive first step, and is very athletic.

One last observation, in the program at the game, they had him listed at 6'4" instead of the 6'3" when he first came to us. Has he grown an inch this year?

I really like Kyles and I think he has scary potential. If he continues to provide energy off the bench and play solid defense he will see more and more playing time from CGM. Any offensive production Kyles gives the team at this point is, in my judgment, icing on the cake.

Kyles is showing signs of being a major contributor later on in this program. I trust him handling the ball more than Clevin or Reggie.

I wouldn't quite go there -- yet. Maybe Reggie.

                      I would.

I wouldn't say I trust him running the team as much as Clevin but I do trust him handling the ball better than Clevin.

I think we'll be seeing Reggie get less and less minutes as we finish out as well. That probably doesn't bode well for WSU having an experienced backup PG next year.

Our experienced backup to Clevin will be Toure'. Unless Reggie does a lot of improving he won't be seeing more than spot minutes and mop up duty. He's definitely not going to keep KJ off the floor at the point.

Let's not dismiss RC too quickly. We have all seen his shot. He went from Sr in HS to freshman JUCO to Soph D-I in 3 years. I expect a bigger than Durley/Hatch improvement from RC next season. Let's not forget it took everyone but MB most of the season to really catch on to HCGM's system.

If his shot is falling and he becomes more knowledgeable and experienced, he does keep KJ off the floor next year. If he doesn't, then he will be on the bench.

My money, with MB working with him, is that he is our backup/split minutes with Hannah PG.
