I was listening to to the radio when Kennedy was talking about how UNI kept getting the ball into Koch and they would call a foul on the Shocks and how they could stop that if someone came over to help. It has me wondering, is the reason the refs suck so badly is that they are deciding that if a team keeps doing the same thing that isn't working, they deserve the foul whether it is the correct call or not? It's like they are judging how well the players are reacting to what is happening in the game rather than whether or not they break a rule that defines a foul.

That sounds a little crazy, I doubt it is true though. I think the is because UNI is the MVC leader and superior team; they want the MVC to get some national attention and it also brings a little attention to the officials when there is a big upset. The Shox definitely deserved this win though.

First off, don't kid about Hightower. After driving to Mo State a few years back to watch the Ed Hightower show I will never laugh at him again. It hurts us too much :(

Second, my mind was blown with the first foul call in the 2nd half. It wasn't that I didn't think JT commit a foul. It was the fact that the UNI player wasn't facing the basket and was still trying to back Durley down and they called it in the act of shooting.

One of two things happened. Either I blacked out for a few seconds and missed him turn around and take a shot or that goes in the record books as one of the worst calls against us yet.

I thought the officiating was mostly good against UNI. With the exception that defending Koch was a foul.

I think the call in a previous post was one where I had a great look. It was a clean strip before any attempt at a shot.

I think the current interpretation is that a hand on the ball is part of the ball. Durley may have nicked a hand, but it looked like all ball.

This is nothing new. When Wes Unseld was in the league, trying to defend him within 3' resulted in a foul every time. Unseld was also allowed to knock somebody into the seats behind the basket if they got in his way.

Guys the refs have seen a lot generally get favorable calls. Unless they've aggravated the refs (Howard).

I agreee with this. Except I thought Jamar got away with murder his senior year-and I loved it. He definitely earned it the other three years.

Don't tell sub this, but there is a lot about a call I can't ever see from where I sit / what I know about the game. This is part of the reason why I say everything goes against the shox because I am going to at least be consistent.

However, one of the few things I'd like to think that I can see is if a guy was shooting when the whistle was blown or not ... or even if he was facing the basket to even think about a shot! These refs blew a couple of those calls tonight, and that I can say with a fair amount of certainty.

Also, poor Hawk. He finally learns to stop, pull up and take the shot / take the foul instead of the charge and ... he steps out of bounds :( (Speaking of OOB, a UNI player had his back heel on the OOB line when he turned to take a long 3 late. No ref was in positioned to see it.)

1)I am not an official so I cannot be branded as a myopic defender of the stripes.

2)I don't know if John Higgins is being punished or has a little something on the side here in Wichita, but he can do every one of our games as far as I am concerned. He is always good, but last night he was great.

3)The other two gents were in a bit over their heads last night.

Even if you didn't like the way the game was called, you can't say they changed the way the game was played nor the outcome.

I understand how some of you seen the JT foul. But the guy had picked up the dribble and had started to spin and was in the process of bringing up his arms to shoot when JT stopped them. Technically, that is in the act of shooting if the ref believes that the offensive players movements showed he was attempting to shoot. Just because the ball never got up or his arms were never able to get into a shooting position doesn't mean he wasn't "in the act of shooting". Fouled in the act means you're shooting free throws. I could see where some might not call it that way but I had no beef with it.

The bald headed ref looked like the principal from Back to the Future. He made most of the foul calls except the one where Durley was charged into, was injured and had to come out of the game. He also would call a foul on one of our guys when Koch was shooting but when similar body contact occurred on Durley or others while they was shooting there was usually no call.

The main thing I want from the refs is consistency and I have not been seeing it this year. To me it almost seems that when a team gets behind the refs do not call fouls as much on particular teams when they get aggressive defensively so as to even out the score.

There is a lot of grabbing and holding going on in these games with the offending player not being called for a foul. #23 and Koch for the other team constantly pushed and grabbed and also would set-up and wrap a leg around one of our players to get entangled. Durley came out of one of these entanglements limping after the UNI player stuck his leg in around Durleys and straightened it. Usually our players got out of the entanglement but if someone has a weak knee that could lead to a season ending injury. That is a wrestling move not basketball. Hatch was grabbed onto on almost every rebound when he was trying to get to the ball. As long as these types of fouls are not called they will continue.

Calling wasn't consistent, yet it was on us, in one possesion they called 3 fouls on us and that set off "a 6-straight fouls run" called on us in the first half.

And one reason we don't shoot as many FTs normally is we fail to attack the basket. It seems like many teams attack the paint against us by either feeding the post or slashing. For some reason, we've been pretty poor at feeding the post and we take a lot of jumpers from outside.

Hopefully that will all change as we have guys that can get inside. We just need to do a better job of getting our guards to feed the post as well. And keep our post players from trying to hard to draw the foul by going right through the middle of the defender and throwing up slop.
