It's also possible that Coach didn't get T'd for anything because Randy or whoever was over there at the time knew that he had a legit gripe and decided to let him vent a little. I know if I botch a call or one of my partners does I'm a little more lenient with the coach and will let him have his say. Within reason of course.

Marshall was pretty heated and that may explain it. And it may not.

I thought about that possibility...hey I goofed and I am going to let you go a bit.....but honestly, if that was the case, you and I both know that the next close call is going the other way to "even it up"...I hate that, but we all know it happens.

I'm not sayin' I'm just sayin'.

I promise I'm done with this after 1 more comment...DownTownShockerBrown made a comment that I agree with wholeheartedly....I see that kind of under the basket contact all the time in a Purdue-Illinois / UNC-FSU etc etc game with no call....Basketball used to be a beautiful game....it is now a slug fest and the refs get blamed when they have no support...whatever has turned the game into a grab and hold and push and bang and punch and slug sucks and has forever marred what used to be a terrific game.

I have NO problem with that being called a foul...always call it a foul...clean up the game and call all the grab and holds....but that isn't the officials fault...it's the fault of a whole lot of people.

That is all. Now I am done.

SF, I believe most people on here appreciate hearing from someone who knows what's going on and why or why not things are called and how things are handled.

And besides, ShockRef has provided a number of valuable comments outside of officiating on this board. Find someone else to attack.
I’ve got to agree with this. About the only time SR makes comments about officiating is when much has already been written about it. In other words he’s not initiating the subject matter and more times than not just lets it go. I too appreciate SR’s expert subject matter on this board, whether it’s on or off-topic in regards to officiating.

      • I've heard some say that refs are a lot less likely to call a T on a coach if the game is close.

Anyways, the best way to approach this is that all refs are horrible and they blow every call against the shockers. This is the consistency I bring to the table.

I haven’t had the time to read the entire thread, however I’m curious what ‘typically’ occurs when an official blows a call? Does he admit the error and apologize immediately to the coach or does he take the Barry Bonds, Roger Clements, A-Rod, approach of denial? I seldom miss a game and unfortunately last night I had other commitments. After watching the replay, I didn’t have a big problem with the officiating… of course I already knew the outcome and that might make a difference in how I viewed the game.

              • Some officials will openly admit to a coach that they blew a call or no call or at least that it was a possibility. Most coaches are fine with that as long as an official isn't saying it over and over.

Others will deny deny deny and take it to their graves.

Either way, if you (the official) knows you goofed you should let the coach vent some as you deserve it. I've actually worked with a guy that on one occassion confessed during the FT and told the coach he until the shots were done to get off his chest what he wanted to as long as he didn't cross the line. After that it was over.

I thought that was an interesting approach. I guess it worked for him.

                • Sorry, but I have to agree with the good Dr.'s last comment. College basjetball used to be a beautiful game of quickness and finesse but is changing into a game of muscle and a slugfest. I may be in the minority, but I's sure llike to see games called closer, especially in the paint.

                  • But A-Rod didn't deny anything, but I digress.

And, yes, it seems there have always been 'make-up calls'.

                    • After watching the replay several times I can see that it could have been called either way or a no call. The camera guy was directly in my way at the game so I had no idea at that time.

My question is with the other charges earlier in the games at the other end of the court where our players were dunked to the floor. Was there really that much contact between the MoSt players and the guards. They certainly did not fall down as Laurie did and did bring their arms down onto the WSU guards. I was not sure that Clevin was going to get up from being thrown down.

I agree. Thats one of the major reasons I stopped watching the NBA. If I want to watch a playground style beat down, I'll go to the playground. It's a shame this style of play has crept into the college game over the past number of years

                        • Whenever I pop in the old tape (which I need to get transferred to DVD) of the WSU-Iowa and WSU-Beakers game in 1981, or AC's single game record night, I am amazed at how different the game looks when it is more about finesse and such and not how much you can physical up the other team. I may have to break that tape out this weekend!

                          • My only possible gripe with the call is it looks like Laurie initiated contact by throwing his chest into clemente.

My only other gripe is the call is not consistent with the way they were calling the game.

                            • For what it's worth....
I love listening to Mike on Shockerradio.com, and listen to all the games not on television here (Joklahoma). Mike does have a tendency to strongly question calls or no calls. When not watching a game, I get the distinct impression that the ref's are blowing it all too often. Mike's call during the MSU game was that the officiating was worse than the Evansville game. Maybe that explains some of the complaints on officiating for some of us.
                              That is all. Thanks! :goshocks:

                              • Thankfully, some of my little 2 year old boy's first sports words other than "ba-ket-ball" were "Shockers" and "Go Shockers" and not "You suck ref!" My season ticket buddy Hockeyshock, whose son is about 5, will not bring said son to a Creighton game for several years due to the potential for learning some new language. From his dad. If you didn't already guess, Hockey has some "special feelings" for Creighton and especially DA.
