YIKES!! That one is definitely gonna leave a mark...
I was in that section and saw the lady on the ground and looking a lot dazed. I hope she is okay, I was going nuts and then I saw some people behind me waving some body to come up there and then saw the lady on the ground, hope she is o kay. I got the tix off the marketplace and had never been that close to the court, I am usually at the top, but man was it awesome to be that close to Toure when he shot that ball, the section is a little dead as nobody seemed to get to excited until the last seconds of the game. I will be back on Saturday, but in a different section, so I hope it is a little livelier!! My throat is still sore this morning, it was a nice 2 hour drive home from the game, gave me sometime to calm down so that I could actually go to bed, when I got home.

It was RIGHT in front of me and I anticipated the slide.....never thought it was anything but a and 1. I cannot believe he got there before Ramon took it to the hoop.

I'll admit when I am wrong but I really have a hard time believing it here without seeing it first.
      McCall still sucks
      That's called dynamite service with a smile....thanks 96.

I will apologize for the "worst call in the history of basketball". It was closer than I thought at the time, a testiment to the tough job that officials have every day. However, I will still contend that it was not a good call no matter what Bruce and Craig said......that was a bang bang play and perhaps the best call would have been a no call. Randy was a bit too full of himself then and all night, imho.
      Doc,
I appreciate your acknowledgment regarding the difficulty of the job.
However, a 'no call' in this instance would have indeed been terrible.
One of many P.O.E.'s this year has been to clean up train wrecks in the paint.
The mandate has been consistent - Blow the whistle.
Whether you call a charge or block - Blow the whistle.
Flops are a different story, but if there clearly is contact - Blow the whistle.
      Thank you. 8)
While the P.O.E. may be legit, why is it only in the Valley? That is a no call in the ACC, Big 12, SEC, Big East, and especially the PAC 10. It is a block in the Big South, America's East, and most other conferences. It is a charge in the Valley because the P.O.E. is on cleaning it up? Is that why there are so many charges being called this year? If so, that in itself will handicap the Valley even more come post season.

If the Offensive player elevates, and comes down within a space that wasn't occupied when he elevated, but has now been occupied legally by a defensive player, and minimal contact is observed, then it should be a no call. If the defensive player intentionally undercuts the offensive player without establishing position, it should be a block. If the offensive player is out of control, or obviously causes excessive contact on the legally established defensive player, it should be a charge.

If you watch the video, Laurie? continues to move forward and vertically into Ramon after he has elevated. If the P.O.E. says you must make a call, it's weird that McCall had the call blown before contact was made, and didn't take a moment to process what he had seen. It was going to be a charge no matter the circumstances, and that is unacceptable.

It should have been a no call.

      • There is something to that. You do not see this many charges called anywhere else. (of course, we have A J........)

        • It should have been a charge and was a charge. Laurie beat him to the spot. I agree that there are way too many no calls in those situations around the NCAA. When there's that much contact down low something has to be called. Laurie was there about the time Ramon caught the pass. The only movement was Laurie standing up straight after being in a defensive position sliding to the spot.

If you guys want to complain about calls find one that has something to it.

          • I thought I had a pretty good view of it live and was certain it was a horrible call. In seeing the video that 96 put together, it was clearly a charge.

Drawing fouls is nice, but our guys have to learn how to avoid the contact and pull up for what will probably be a largely uncontested shot (as the defender stands there waiting for the charge and can't respond quick enough to contest).

            • I've now watched it 7 times and guess what - Laurie still beats RC to the spot.
Laurie establishes a legal guarding position BEFORE RC leaves the floor. He holds his position and RC crashes into him. It's a PC and McCall is in perfect position to make the call.
If you think this is a no call, then the only fouls you consider legit would involve blood, multiple contusions and broken bones. 8)
Above all, make the right call.

I just watched it too and have to agree. No doubt that Laurie was in position. He was at the spot before Ramon ever left the floor.

There is a simple question in terms of the proper call.
Who beat who to the spot?
In this case, although close, Laurie beat RC there.

You have personally ruined VT with your puke and vitriol you trowel out every 5 minutes on there.

You are rich. So when our players make a bone-headed play, should I compliment them on it? A little pat on the back?

I at least discuss the game and its results/actions. You nauseate everybody with your constant flip of the officials book. You never talk about WSU, just about blindly backing up your striped 'brothers' every single time.

I've already forgiven (and most of the time I also forget) SF's offenses. I really wish everybody get along. :innocent:
I think it's a good time to come together as our team is turning around. This Saturday game will be a good indication. :wsu_posters:

                        • I don't want to take the time to copy everyone that has made a valid point but first let me point out that Royal, DTSB, SG22 &ShockRef all took the time to analyze and give a fair and accurate assessment of the situation, mixing in their own wealth of knowledge, experience and judgement.

Thank you...you all make excellent points and contribute to the point that the job is very difficult and mostly thankless.

After even further review, I would agree that the call was right. However, given the totality of the game, my expectations were different than the outcome.

My complaint, and the reason I think I overreacted at the time was something I have heard and been accustomed to believing and that is consistency....Cooks went in on the other end and one of the officials "bailed him out" with our guys in good defensive postion...I got frustrated with what appeared to be inequities of "close" calls that do tend to break in the home teams favor for whatever reason. It also appeared to me that Randy especially was taking things way too personally and I surmized that it affected his calls....perhaps that is unfair, I will concede that....but it's how I saw the whole picture even if I explained it poorly at first. I want to see the games called fairly and I want the players to decide the games....last night that seemed to come and go with little or no reason.

Let me add that as uneven as I thought the close calls were, I believe Coach took the complaining too far last night....why did he not get T'd? He certainly deserved it.

                          • There's nothing wrong with someone as informed as ShockRef commenting on the officials when so many less informed are constantly doing it. Would you rather that he lets you all think you know something that you obviously don't when you spout off uninformed about how the game is officiated.

SF, I believe most people on here appreciate hearing from someone who knows what's going on and why or why not things are called and how things are handled.

And besides, ShockRef has provided a number of valuable comments outside of officiating on this board. Find someone else to attack.

It's also possible that Coach didn't get T'd for anything because Randy or whoever was over there at the time knew that he had a legit gripe and decided to let him vent a little. I know if I botch a call or one of my partners does I'm a little more lenient with the coach and will let him have his say. Within reason of course.

Marshall was pretty heated and that may explain it. And it may not.
