  • Some thoughts on the Ice Man

I think this may be more appropriate for after the season, but the events of yesterday make me want to throw it out there anyway.

I don't know how many times I've heard the phrase "has ice water in his veins" used in conjunction with Mr. Toure' Murry all ready in this young man's career. I think it's apt, but there are some things I would like to happen with his game soon:

There is no question that the ball will be in his hands in late game, make or break situations for years. Whether we're in the lead or not, a man with the unflappable disposition and unwavering confidence that he possesses will often be in position to ice games for us.

This, in my mind, means free throw shooting. I want 85%+ and opponents to simply deflate when he's got the ball with the last seconds ticking away.

Also, this makes his that much more dangerous if he continues to employ the Hannah-like trickery drawing fouls on the perimeter like he was earlier in the Evansville game, making up for situations where the team isn't shooting well... essentially willing points for us to show up on the scoreboard.

I see reduced turnovers and an increase in overall shooting percentage coming naturally with getting more time in with his teammates and Marshall's system. Free throws you have to work at. If he's truly destined to be the big man taking the big shots, Toure' needs to step up and hit the gimmes. Getting so cold that opponents freeze and think twice every time he gets the ball.

Here! Here! TM's future looks very promising. His FT pct is decent, but if he can get his current 37 percent FG pct up to 43-45 percent, look out! I see WSU's next NBA product.

I'd, of course, like to see his %s inch up as well, but I think it is interesting that even at those numbers he is demanding a heckuva lot of attention and drawing some tough defenders.

On a technique issue (given that I'm an expert!), his shot seems to have flattened as the season has worn on. Or maybe I'm just seeing it and noticing it more.

As a starting Freshman, I think he has 3 more years to perfect his game. He will be a beast by his Jr. year.

He shoots it flat. His normal release point is right in front of his nose, and the arc on his three to beat Evansville had more arc than any shot I've seen him take all season.

I think that may be why his FT% is a little low, his FT motion is an over the head long arm shot that doesn't use the same arm mechanics as his jumper.

I feel fine guys. What's the deal, did I say something wrong? :D Believe me, I am capable of being positive - a 3 game winning streak will do that to ya'. If we lose Wed. however, look for me to become Shockernet's Ebeneezer Scrooge again.

Thank you - I now have that saved.

It clearly shows the coaching staff shaking hands with the UE staff before the crowd and coach celebration took place.

Toure's shot will improve. Ever notice how almost every game he'll launch a long 3-pointer that doesn't draw iron and is often not even close?

He's probably got some little hitch in his shot. I'm betting the coaches have noticed that and will work on it in the off-season. It seems coaches don't like to tinker or alter a player's shot in fall practice or mid-season for fear of adding doubt and too much thought into a player's shooting stroke. Spring individual workouts are often used to implement tweaks that the player can work on all summer to improve. Same thing with free throw shooting.

Add to that, he's still a kid. Toure' like all freshman is still emotional on the court. With maturity he will settle down and his percentages will steadily go up. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him become an 80+% FT guy. With his size, he'll also be able to learn to take the ball to the rack more consistently, which will help his overall FG percentage as well.

It looks like we have found someone that wants the ball in his hands when time is running out and will do something positive with the ball. He hits the clutch shot or makes a good dish, rather than dribble it out of bounds like the last player we had that wanted the ball at the end of the game.
