The dance team and spirit squad are separate, I believe.

It makes me wonder if they were banned from competition for a period of time. If true, they appearently don't have the motivation or desire to work on a routine, which I find disappointing. I always enjoyed watching them perform. I just never liked the impression I got that they were all about the competition and being "cheerleaders" was secondary.
