I beleive it was year before HCGM took the WSU job, he brought Winthrop into Mo State for the Bracketbuster and kicked the Bear's arse's by 20 or so. That same year, we lost to the Bear's.
His Winthrop team would have won the MVC that year. He will have no problem coaching in the MVC once his players mature and he has the pipeline full.

I remember that game and the game Winthrop played against North Carolina earlier in the season, and was shocked by their athleticism and intensity compared to the Turgeon version of the Shocks. The beat the Bears handily and took the Tar Heels to the brink of an upset on a neutral court. HCGM WILL get the Shox to that level, but it doesn't happen in the Valley as quickly as it could in the Southern Conference. The difference in our backcourt is already apparent. It will be like that in the front court within the next 2 years.
I knew that year when I saw GM that he was my choice to replace Turgeon. I am still convinced.

Most of us expect WSU to be the SIU of 2010-2020 and win the Valley every year under Gregg Marshall. Right?
Would Winthrop have beaten Sweet16 SIU for the Valley title in 2006-7?
They could have beaten SIU that year. Had it not been for a last second desperation shot by Tennessee in the tourney the previous season, they might have beaten the Shox and it could have been them in the S16 instead of us.

Yes, they could have.... Had it not been for the last second short by Tennessee in the tourney that year, Winthrop would have played us and might just have beaten us, going to the S16 instead of us..
well, murry, stutz, kyles will be seniors
manigault and hamilton juniors (possibly Orupke a junior) and if we continue to recruit good players to fill in the freshman and sophomore class of that year - -I feel we have a real chance. Granted, it takes everything to fall JUST RIGHT for us to make it along with a little luck. BUT I do feel we will have everything in place for a BIG season! What does SIU have to do with my prediction. Im just logically and positively thinking toward the future. All the negative stuff isnt going to help the shockers get any better - - if you are a true shocker fan - you might as well be in it "for the long haul," as Coach Marshall said.
They predict they are going to a final 4 every year.
Frankly it better to reasonable expectations of WSU having a good team and make the post-season. You have to get there before anything special happens. How many teams make a final 4 where that is their players first trip to the NCAA?

Special Memo to Coach Marshall - you better remember there is a large number of Shocker fans who have attended more Shocker B-Ball games than you have or probably ever will.
2nd, there a lot of fans that still remember what at Top 10, Top 20 team looks like with Carr, Livingston, X-Man (or recently the Miller/P.J./Brauer/Ogirri) teams. Where MTXE wasn't just a slogan but was lived out on the court.
If you think the roundhouse was loud for a few minutes the other night then you have not seen anything yet. Put a quality product on the floor that plays and fights their heart out every night and you'll be rewarded with a crowd response that will blow the roof off. You might even get even get to see the time when every fan stand and cheer the whole game (e.g. NIT game against Florida State).

Sorry SB, I dont think its your place to lecture HCGM. I lived and rooted for the Shocks in those days and one thing I know is it takes time to build a winning team. HCGM inherited a player situation that was less than stellar. This is for all practical purposes the first full year of our rebuilding . Our team is young and shows all the problems of youth. I suggest if we are in the same situation in 2 years then its time to be concerned. For now , I suggest we all sit back and enjoy the ups and downs of a talented young team who is trying to figure D1 BB out. We are crawling now, next we walk and then we run!

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kickass ... and I'm all out of bubblegum.
At a time when we have a significant recruit considering becoming a Shocker, perhaps some of you so called fans could curb the negativism.
Safe to say, it would be our team's performance which has had a much more negative impact on said recruit than any of the still relatively muted negativism put forth on this board.
Apparently you do not remember the Smithson years and Team A vs. Team B if you think things are dicey on here now.
Final Four in 2012, (if the committed recruits hang with us)
You know how prophets are suppose to be treated right? If your prophecy is wrong you must be stoned to death. Care to retract?
A Final Four is not impossible if the "stars" are right. AE could be a good player if he learns a lot and plays the 4 rather than the 3; he has the height, wingspan and shot (when the mental aspects of his game are working correctly) to be a great college player. GS looks like he is improving through the season; he needs to pay his dues (e.g. learn to deal with double teams) this year, become stronger and develop into a dominate player as a junior and senior. TM needs to improve his defense and improve in general but he already looks very good. Hatch does some things well; I can see him being a "Funk-type" player as a senior with good shooting, smart passes, appropriate drives to the basket, etc. Johnny Coy would fill a hole we have if he can play good defense (and good offense); A.J. Hawkins' defense does not make me forget PJ. DK may end up being one of the best guards in the MVC as a junior and senior if he gets smarter. Having EO would be great too. ETC.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful: Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.
I half expected posts like this after the game last night. I have to admit, even I am frustrated.
When I think back long enough, I recall Turgeon, year 2 or 3, I don't exactly recall which, but we were playing in the KS COliseum that season, and we were playing SIU. If I recall correctly, we were down 45 points (or maybe it was 40-something, but it was 40+ points.) I left the game early. I was pretty upset then, and Turgeon eventually did some pretty OK things a year, 2, and even 3 years later.
SO I honestly have to be objective with myself and say, it's his first real season with actual get-out-and-recruit players, I wouldn't be surprised by another loss like this, this season, maybe even one close to it next season. Give it time. Everyone (well, most, or some) of us expected ups and downs this year.
I root for them, not against them (nor the coach.) You keep plugging along and doing things the right way, and good things will happen. :goshocks:

If you've got to get the frustration out of your system, go out in your backyard and howl at the moon.
"so called fans"?
You may be criticizing fans who care too much, not too little.
I don't normally mind the negativism unless it is specifically and constantly directed at one player. I just think that now is a poor time to be displaying it. It should be rather obvious to anyone that recruits and their families read and post on shockernet. Bad mouthing the coach and players normally may not set a very good example.
