Barry is just a good dude plain and simple. I doubt anyone wishes him anything but the best in whatever he does.

Did the current MSU coach get a substantial increase over what they were paying Barry?
They are paying Coach "Zo" more but still in the lower 1/2 of the D1 scale. Remember this is the "show me" state so if he starts taking the Bears to the tourney he'll get a raise. I don't see MSU ever paying WSU $$$. A few years ago, some of the alums threw a fit over the women's coach not being paid the same as the men's.

I stil think MSU made a huge mistake. The fan base turned on Barry when he got dissed by the NCAA Selection Committee twice. He didn't have a chance the last couple of years he was there. His contract situation made it obvious MSU was trying to get rid of him. Tough to recruit that way.
Barry never took MSU to the NCAA's. He should have been there twice. Until the administration at MSU hamstrung his recruiting efforts, MSU was consistently in the top 3 - 5 in the Valley.
You don't fire a coach who can do that. Especially since it seems his recruiting budget limited him to recruiting within a couple hundred miles of Springfield.
Coaching MSU is not an attractive job. If MSU made a mistake on their hire, they could be on their way to what WSU was in the '90's.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Good luck Barry. You never seemed like anything but a classy guy and a formidable coach to me. Did I mention you were always entertaining to listen to?
Every time I ever heard him speak (I'd download the coaches press calls from the Valley website and still do during the season) to the media he was always the biggest cheerleader and promoter for THE VALLEY.
Our league is definately going to miss him if for nothing else for what I just typed.
He's the kind of guy that could sell ice to the Eskimos if you know what I mean. As much as I dislike KU, he'll do good things for them I'm sure.

2. Can you tell us what the administration did to hamstring his recruiting efforts? He was never left with only one year on his contract. He still had two years on it when he was fired.
3. Please show me where you found that his recruiting budget kept him within a couple hundred miles of Springfield. The funny thing is that Zo has recruited kids from Oregon and California this year, so either you're full of it or the recruiting budget somehow skyrocketed this year.
4. Why is coaching at MSU not an attractive job? Na, no coach would want a brand new, 11,000 seat arena to recruit with. First you said that MSU was finishing in the top 3-5, then you said it isn't an attractive place to coach at. Which is it? I would think playing in a dump and finishing 9th every year would be unattractive, but that's just me I guess.Go Bears

Who pissed in your Cork Flakes this morning?
The pay at MSU would make it less attractive than many places.
I doubt the new coaches recruiting budget is much higher than Hinsons was. But it wasn't that budget that got kids from the West Coast. It was his contacts and time from wherever the hell he came from. We'll see how it looks a few years from now.
I hope MSU steps up and actually invests more in the program. As much as I dislike MSU, the better they are the better it is for the Valley.
11K seats doesn't do much if you don't fill it. It will just look less impressive to any visiting recruit. I have no idea what ticket sales look like at the moment, but I've heard there will be a number of empty seats.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

I always liked Barry as a person, but his teams won in spite of his coaching. I will never forget the year we trounced them horribly. We were torching the nets from outside. Hinson's response? Switch to a zone! (And predictably, it only got worse.)
trout, perhaps you can clear some things up. In the Hinson tenure, has MSU's roster been dominated by players from Missouri or states bordering Missouri? If so, that would explain the perception of the recruiting budget.
Have the politics that allowed that one Springfield feminist to influence coaching salaries changed so that the school ignores her? That has also fueled the limited salary perception of the MSU job.

As far as the feminist thing: Their whole thing is Title 9. Title 9 has nothing to do with paying coaches. If Barry had made a tournament, I GUARANTEE you that he would have gotten a raise. He never did anything to warrant a significant raise though because he didn't do anything to demand it. The school knew that he wasn't going anywhere so they weren't going to pay him any more.Go Bears
