Splangler, curious as to why you would consider redhirting Hatch? With the talent we now have at the guard positions, it would seem likely that the limited PT he will get is that as a role player when we need a shooter inserted into the line-up.

I don't think Hatch will redshirt. He knows the system now and will fill in spot minutes really nicely.

The reason Hatch will likely see minutes is that he is a big physical guard. He doesn't have to be open to hit a three because he can shoot over smaller defenders (something he did last year that impressed me). Likewise he can guard big, physical guards without being pushed around easily.

I don't know how much playing time he will get, but he showed the ability to come in cold and hit 3-pointers, often guarded, at a .435 clip. Even with the limited number of shots that represents, that is a valuable commodity.

Someone suggested that some players might redshirt; I was trying to guess who might be candidates. Hatch could be valuable or he could ride the bench; it all depends on HCGM's offensive plan. With a lot of passing and screens, Hatch could be our outside clutch shooter. If it is more of an "athletic" create-your-own-shot offense, Hatch may not have a role. I don't know if Hatch has recovered from his long layoff. I don't know if GM has a set offensive plan.

I am curious to see who will actually back up AJ at SF this year. This is MY list in order of likliness:

Ellis
Gris
Murry
Kyles

Do remember that barring injury we are talking about 5-10 minutes a game of PT.

It's summer and all we can do is speculate and discusss the speculation, so here' my take on the backup at 3.

It will be either Ellis or Kyles depending on matchups.

If we're facing a smaller and quicker 3, then Kyles looks like a good option. He seems to have the athleticism, slashes, and pull-up shots to be a good option as a 3-guard. Girs isn't quick enough to cover players like that. Ellis tried a few times last year, but he's got to go down a long ways to defend a 6'4" or 6'5" guy with quickness and moves. Kyles "seems" like a better option at 3 than Murry. Murry "seems" like more of a perimeter player,

If we're facing a 3 that's 6'6" or taller, Ellis backs up Hawk. That substitution looks really obvious from what we think we know today.

I think that Aarg is probably right. I remember GM saying last year after the UMKC game (I think that was the game) that Ellis was going to get some more looks at PF because the 6'4 player (Dailey maybe) was more of a guard and too quick for Ellis who had difficulty staying with him on defense. If Ellis is more flexible to play multiple positions, it would get him more playing time.

If Hatch was in the game, his defender was supposed to stick with them wherever he went, while the other guys were supposed to clog the middle. With the 3 point line moving back another foot, Hatch may be even more valuable in certain situations.

That is my take as well. A pure spot up shooter is always an asset.

If someone doesn't think that Hatch will get much playing time now when he's a sophomore, what good will redshirting him do when it will place him in the same class as Kyles and Murry next season?

After last year, I'd be surprised if Marshal redshirts anyone.

I agree. I don't think HCGM will redshirt anyone. I think he wants to hit on all cylcinders after last year. I think he will 'Boot Camp' the freshmen in practice to prepare them, and then let their talent take over on the court.

It is good to have so much depth especially since we usually have some injuries during the season.

Last year, Hatch was utilized as much as he was because Gal was not delivering from 3 point land like he was advertised. With Braeuer out, Hatch became our only real scoring threat from outside other than PJ. Gal drove and hit some pullups, but was pretty nil from the 3.

I wonder who will be assigned to coach the 'Big Men'???

This was an enjoyable early analysis of the "new look" Shocks. What really put it all in perspective for me was Joel W. first sentence that read as follows. "And with the top four scorers gone, there is plenty of rebuilding to be done by Coach Gregg Marshall. P.J." This fact put things in perspective for me but did not curb my excitement of positive things to come.

Thus, this indeed will be a Season of chills, thrills, and spills.. This is a team with a major face lift. How soon and how often can they bring it all together? The new talent is overwhelming and impressive. As much as I like 7's, I really like what he wrote on our Shocks, but think we will be in the top 5 in the Valley race this year.

Just like Doc, I think we will be special, and "watch out below" the following Season. Even Joel's line-up that included Durley could be real early on. However, we have so many unknowns that have to be sorted out. Garrett Stutz may be a starter sooner than later. EO will be an asset and utilized as his raw talents become a more finished product. The Juco guards are "lights out" shooters. Every solitary player will receive a fair shake to do what they can contribute to this Shocker team effort.

Each and every practice will be a war. The talent is alive and well at 21st and Hillside. My "birds eye view" of this squad has left me optimistic but not too quick to think we are "world beaters" quite yet. Do I think we can shoot the ball? Oh---yeallll!!! That we Can do far better than last Season.. However, it will take due time to come together and find our niche as a team.

This Coaching Staff has their work cut out for them and this Season will be NO bowl of cherries. However, FSF is glad we have these Coaches at the helm and know we are in great hands in terms of moving forward this very Season. The following Season for our Shocks? Ohhhhhhh bay bay!!!!!!!!!

That's the quick lineup we'll have to use to counter someone going small on us in 2010-11. And that's only counting people who are already here. Chamberlain and Ellis are the only Sr's in that scenario.
