Let me ask you something. How civil was slavery and lynching black people in trees? American civility sure is becoming coarser by the day, isn't it.

    A false argument, of course.
I think it is a very good argument. People all the time point to pre-60s America as a more moral time without coming to terms with the deeply immoral (and uncivil) parts of American culture.

It gets us far afield from music but the good doctor's post did that to begin with.

You just knew this type of BS post was coming as soon as this topic took off. Probably the same type of person who thinks Al Sharpton provides a valuable service for African-Americans. What a tool. 8)

I can pretty much assure you that nobody pays much attention to many lyrics. Just a few lyrics that are pounded out and repeated a lot. Those are usually for shock effect and that effect gets applied to entire genres.

Raunchy lyrics are scattered throughout the history of recorded music. I've gotten the lyrics to more than a few songs I've listened to for years and when I read the lyrics seriously wondered if I wanted to learn the song and sing the lyrics. I generally figure that I pay more attention to music than most and if I didn't pick up the lyrics earlier, no one's going to pick them up when I do the song.

Rap and hip hop is more about rhythm patterns. Rhythm patterns can get people pumped up. Let them listen to anything they want to listen to. They're probably getting pumped just from the rhythms they hear in the background. If they practice that way, the same feeling can carry over into games. The association between basketball and feeling pumped will be made.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

They're playing you're not - wear ear muffs next time.

By the way, nice report. Keep up the good work.
            <sigh>

I was hoping for some Henry Mancini songs such as Peter Gunn, Pink Panther and Mr. Lucky.
And here I thought you wanted the sound track from Rockey Horror Picture Show.

I'm sure you'd love the tracks from Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Footloose, Flashdance and Urban Cowboy.

Slavery is still alive and well. Instead of being racial, it's class slavery. The illegal immigrant working back-breaking jobs with long hours and little pay living in fear of a green card check is merely another form of slavery. The poor kid in the ghetto watching everyone around him living in a self-destructive pattern with no hope of change is slavery. The child at home with obsessive parents is forever enslaved to the helicopter parent because they cannot function apart from them.

Slavery is still here. Only now, the chains are invisible.

Rife violence? It's still here. Ever thought about avoiding a certain part of town at night? Instead of the KKK it's MS13 and the Crips. Instead of a lynching, we have gun battles.

No, America hasn't gotten much better. The nature of the violence has changed.

My older daughter was a huge fan of Tupac Shakur and still prefers rap. The video you linked to was ... interesting.

Wow!! I see no problem with discussing the shortcomings of previous generations.

I much prefer CSNY's Southern Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WqX_cVz-Tc to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama. To me, which you prefer says a lot about you.

The young, naive liberal has surfaced. It was inevitable, it had to happen. I knew this thread would generate this type of dribble. Anyone with an IQ of room temperature and making at least 80K per year watched and waited. Of course, we weren't disappointed.
Just so predictable. The more things change, the more they remain the same. 8)

                            So I'm a liberal now?

What did I do in a previous life to warrant such inhumane treatment...

j/k. But I try not to be a liberal.

How did we get from a report on the pickup games to the state of race relations and classism in America?

                                Man did we digress here...

Talk about that stuff in the 'off topic' forum!
