Re: Dr. Wu Speaks Out on Recruiting....Maybe
RDR,
I wish I could show a nice clean graph that quantified exactly what the two staffs did (or did not) do. Unfortunately that would neither be accurate nor fair.
From what I have learned over the past 8 years, I conclude the following. Mark is a very, very smart man that uses his resources to the best of their ability. He is an excellent manager who delegates to his subordinates and gives them responsibility with expectations. Everyone has a job and is expected to do just that. Over the years he has developed a tremendous network of contacts that he looks to for both guidance and information.......and for recruits. I believe Mark relies on these contacts for a great deal of his recruiting information. There is nothing wrong with that, at all, IF those contacts are good at what you are asking them to do. It is my OPINION only, that Mark relies a little too much on these contacts and believes in them just a little too much. I hate to do it, but I'm going to anyway.......call it the arrogantKUsyndrome. "I went to KU and I'm smart so by default the people I know and trust must also be as smart or smarter." I know, I know..........
Gregg, on the other hand, is a blue collar, roll up your sleeves and work dawn to dusk kind of a guy that has busted his tail for every single break that he has made for himself over the years. It's not that Mark doesn't work hard.....he absolutely does but Gregg just has a different "motor". Those coaches are non stop and they are never giving up looking for new and better talent.
My opinion is that Mark also recruited for a particular piece to the puzzle and tended to pigeonhole himself, from time to time, with his recruits. Gregg is far more open minded. He is going to look at literally 100s of kids and try and find the best player he can, usually without too many boundaries.
And lastly, no matter what Mark can bring "to the table" with his contacts and experience, Gregg can sell ketchup popcicles to women in white gloves. He is a closer, big time, and he impresses any kid and any family. I don't think Mark (or most coaches for that matter) are on his level. Gregg is comfortable around everyone.
Of course, the proof is in the results. Time will tell. I know many think I walk around with yellow glasses on all the time but truth be told, I'm fairly pragmatic and have a pretty solid understanding of what the game is about. I predicted a good season last year, before the strangest and most injury consumed season in memory and I still think we were a nearly 20 win team if we would have stayed healthy. We are on the right course and very shortly, a great deal of folks out there are going to get a taste of what Shocker basketball is going to be for a very, very long time and if you happen to be in the way, you better watch out.
