Poor Bear is an official student at WSU this summer. Hes taking classes so yes he can participate. He will transfer to Sunrise in the fall and then there will be more restrictions on what he can do.

I think he can participate in pick-up games regardless of whether or not he is taking summer classes. Not sure he can participate in any formal workouts the Coaches are allowed to do at this time of the year (if any) with team members without triggering the start of his 5 to play 4 time clock. My guess is he can't since he is not an official member of the team.

Also, until he signs his LOI (hopefully in November) Shocker "Boosters" need to treat him the same as any other recruit or potential recruit in terms of any contact they might have with him.

Every kiss of the rim begins with CJ. I have to speculate he may be playing both some 2 and 3 this Season which is a very good thing.

His short amount of court time was pretty positive I thought. He didn't embarrass himself or look nervous at all. He could be a factor this year if he can shoot it a little.

Yes, and he has the chance to become another defensive stopper. The more of those we have, then it is as hard to score on us then pulling hens teeth.

Where is this projection of CJ being a defensive stopper comong from? He could be. He could also be an 18 point a game scorer or a drop 10 assists a night, or grab 10 boards. I haven't seen anything in his limited minutes to believe any one of those is more likely than the other. I believe he is physically gifted and likely to find a role.

Fair enough. We'll see how it plays out. There is certainly some self selection and role acceptance in developing into "the guy" on defense. He certainly seems to embrace it. Zach Brown was also going to be "the guy" on defense and while a good defender and all around player has not yet developed into a scary defender a la Cotton, or frankly as much of an offensive threat as Cotton.

If you had made this comment following Zach's sophomore year, that might have made sense (because he was inconsistent that year, particularly with picking up bad fouls too often), but Zach absolutely stepped into that stopper role for us (he dominated Paris Lee, for instance). Zach's offense has certainly not gained consistency, but I have trouble understanding how someone could have watched this team last year and think that Zach wasn't living up to his defensive potential.

I too, disagree on Zach. He took the best player from 1-4 on the other team during at least the last half of the year. In addition to Paris Lee who was a point guard and 6'1 or 6'2, he guarded Scoochie (Dayton PG), and Monk (UK guard 6'6) during the tournament. Markis shared the stopper role with ZB in a lesser way. The ESPN analysts made many comments on Zach taking on his role as a stopper and perimeter shooter (Zach was an inconsistent shooter except in the NCAA tourney).

Cotton was very good too, and perhaps a little more physical, but at 6'1 or 6'2, he didn't have the arm length that Zach and Markis do. Cotton's offense was also inconsistent but he made big shots during the NCAA tourney too.

We will be very good on defense this year with our length (the exceptions are that Conner doesn't have length and our 5's, especially Darryl were inconsistent).

Not saying he's a stiff, just not a stopper. A good defender on a team of mostly good defenders.
