So what exactly is WSU's motivation to host then? If you can't play here, what's the benefit? I've heard financial bandied about, but I've never read anything that referenced that at all, much less specifics.

I mean... good for Wichita and all, but Wichita and WSU are separate entities with separate motivations and interests, in this case.

Wichita hasn't hosted in 24 years. WSU has been going "on the road" for the NCAA tournament and done just fine.

This is a process. You can't expect WSU to simply tell the NCAA they want a home game and be granted that. WSU hosting is likely the only way NCAA comes to Wichita. WSU continues to build it's brand, does well in supporting these first two, and we'll see where we are for the third. WSU at home or not, it's still going to be fun watching the two days of basketball and great for the economy.

Not sure the financial incentives for WSU, but they do get to show off the campus and city to NCAA and get to showcase IBA to other schools who might be willing to come back to play WSU.

I'm not sure why everyone here gets hung on up on the thought that we could play here. It just doesn't happen. Anytime there is a major university in the same city as a site, it is the host. Ohio State will host in Columbus(not their arena), Tulsa hosts BOK, Washington hosts at Key arena, etc.

I was not aware that there are indeed two major arenas in Columbus. Interesting. You learn something new every day.

Just last year, OU played in OKC (basically 20 miles from home) because the B12 hosted.

Not the same city as the university is in(a slight technicality, but it holds all the same). The only cases I can find of a university playing in it's home city in before Sweet 16 is Villanova(not sure how you handle the Big 5? Just let no one play there?) and Dayton(had to play at home because Dayton is and will likely always be the host for the first four).

I'm pretty sure that when it was announced that Wichita was awarded the 2018 site that it was stated that if there was the potential that WSU could get a protected seed that WSU would not be the co-host and the MVC would be the sole host. That would clear the way for WSU to play at IBA. With the change in conferences it looks like the MVC is no longer willing to be the sole host.

I believe the the article yesterday stated that WSU could get up $200K for hosting. However, it kind of made it sound like at least some of the money has to be applied to hosting the event.

Whether WSU gets to play here or not, it is a good thing. I am a firm believer in what's good for WSU is good for Wichita, and what's good for Wichita is good for WSU. Pretty sure that Bardo has essentially said the same thing in different words.

Anyone have a link on the first bit? I've never seen anything like that, that wasn't shockernet conjecture. I do know that it was stated by both the NCAA and WSU that had we made the women's tourney in 2011 they would have played here.

Women's tournament is a different setup. Because of travel costs, they'll keep teams at home if the opprtunity is there.

Oh I know, I was just pointing out people could be confusing two different events with regards to WSU playing at IBA.

The soulless Bruce once said that a member of the MVC specifically stated that if WSU was not the host that they could play there.
The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?

A team will not be permitted to play in any facility in which it has played more than three games during its season, not including exhibitions and conference postseason tournaments.

A host institution’s team shall not be permitted to play at the site where the institution is hosting. However, the team may play on the same days when the institution is hosting.

Teams may play at a site where the conference of which it is a member is serving as the host.

There was a reason that among the dignataries not only in attendance at the press conference announcing they were joining the AAC but also speaking at the press conference were the Mayor of Wichita and the Chairman of the Sedgwick County Commission.

The interests of Wichita State and Wichita/Sedgwick County may not always be totally aligned but most often what is good for one is good for the other.
