Where would CJ be today if HCGM hadn't done all he did for him, especially with WSU being high profile? That high profile was both a potential high risk for HCGM and a boon for CJ.

Then there is the timing of all this coming on the heals of being admitted to the AAC, something, I'm sure, all 3 wanted very badly for WSU and themselves.

@shoxtop: said, "I feel like there are still some here that need to understand that is where we are now." I fully understand that....in most situations. This is not. All 3, HCGM, GH, and CJ, were getting a "promotion" of sorts with us going to the AAC next season. Yes, if both leave, I do feel a bit like they bailed on the coach and school that helped get them there. Had we still been in the Valley, I'd have no problem with this situation.

There. I said it. I'm not going to hide some of my feelings as this affects us and WSU as well as HCGM.
The combined timing for the GH leave and the CJ interest in NMSU is pretty strange. The fact the events have more or less happened concurrently is head-scratching. NMSU started their new coaching search, and GH announced his move to LSU, literally the same day (last Tuesday).

This whole thing is weird. Wouldn't it be normal to ask for at least a one year commitment when CJ was offered the AHC position?

While losing both GH and CJ would suck big time, i'm very confident HCGM would be able to find an excellent replacement.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

3G may have just wanted to make sure CJ new where he stood at Wichita State before taking another head coaching gig. I don't thing you can begrudge CJ pursuing head coaching positions. The man is 48 years old. He has paid his dues. Hope CJ stays and I think he can maybe do better than NMSU in the next couple of years but there are no guarantees.

CJ has committed a lot more than a year to Wichita State and HCGM including in the role of Associate Head Coach.

The timing just looks like coincidence to me. If Jans was going to return to the staff, someone had to go. Heiar was the likely one to go, since he and Jans were both in line for the same position. That can't work, so Heiar left. Jans had probably already applied at NMSU before getting back on the WSU staff.

The timing isn't terribly surprising. Marshall had to get Jans on staff before someone else offered him an assistant's job. I doubt anyone was expecting Jans would be a finalist for a HC gig this soon after his incident. It's kind of a perfect storm where Marshall could end up losing the two most valuable people he had working with him last year.

Losing both could definitely have an effect on the on-court performance next year. It's a good year to have a lot of Sr's.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

If CJ does get the NMSU job I will wish him well. He's paid his dues and I believe he will be an outstanding HC.

I just thought it would be normal to ask for a commitment of a year or two when offering a promotion.

Not sure this situation qualifies as normal.

I feel pretty good about CJ staying. Next year is set up to be a really special year, and everybody feels this team will go deep, potentially even play for a title. Finishing next season on such a high stage, you'd think CJ would be able to land an even better gig after next season, not that NMSU is bad. I just think he can do better, and I'd like to think he feels that way and is just employing a tactic learned from the 3G School of Negotiation in order secure a bit more cheese in his contract by "not keeping his head in the sand".

If CJ wasn't interested in this job he would have probably withdrawn his name from consideration before he became one of two finalists. Yeah he could still decline the offer if he is NMSU's #1 choice but that would be a bit unusual. We''ll see I guess.

So if NMSU is cash strapped and money is a concern, do they choose a HC first and then negotiate a price or do they have a monetary offer in mind first and then a coach (a take it or leave it offer)? Is Coach Jan's only interested in being a head coach or are there other things regarding the job that are important too?

He was in New Mexico interviewing on Friday. He's definitely still interested

I would think they would at least have to have a handshake/verbal understanding before they would announce their choice or before CJ would accept an offer. If there are no $ specified it is not really an offer is it?

NMSt players want their assistant coach Bopp to be hired as the HC.

Of course they do. And I hope that opinion has some sway. It scares me that it's a former valley AD who knows first hand what Jans' abilities are and that mindset will win out.
